Public outcry has forced the Attorney General to refer the sentences of three teenage boys who were spared jail after raping two schoolgirls in separate attacks to the Court of Appeal.
The two girls, aged 14 and 15 at the time, were raped by two 14-year-old boys weeks apart in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, with a then-13-year-old also convicted over his role in the second incident.
But despite the horrific nature of the attacks - which saw one of the girls gang-raped at knifepoint with the assaults filmed and one uploaded to social media - all three were handed youth rehabilitation orders and walked free from court.

In an early statement, the now ex-MSP denied any knowledge of the crimes and described how she felt "deceived and let down" by her long-term hubby and that she would be making no further comment. But just a few hours later, she defended herself again after rivals and party members suggested there was no chance she knew nothing.
It led to a brutal putdown by the Harry Potter author who said: "You appear not to understand the difference between 'instead' and 'as well'." This was a perfect troll as Ms Given furiously hit back: "I'm well aware of the difference. I used 'instead' because she seems to be getting more heat than he is, but you know that already. Tag me next time, s*ebag."
Ms Rowling then responded to a comment which read: "I think it’s misogynistic to think the wife is too stupid to understand their household income and not notice a sudden influx of cash." She wrote: "Every other day a new motorhome appears in my mother-in-law's drive and Neil hands me another bucket full of jewellery and cosmetics. I can only assume he's got himself a part time job I'm too busy to ask about."

Almost as jaw-dropping as the litany of luxury goods he snaffled was the reaction to his guilty plea from his ex-wife Nicola Sturgeon. The former First Minister wants us to believe that she never suspected a thing, despite vast sums of the stolen cash being used to feather the marital nest she shared with him. Did she never stop to ask her husband whether, or how, they could afford the new cars – never mind that £125,000 motorhome parked on his mother’s driveway? This is Nicola Sturgeon, the supposed master of detail, not some naïve dafty. Together, she and Murrell had a vice-like grip over the SNP for years. They controlled their party from top to bottom. Those who stepped out of line were quickly dispatched and buried in the political equivalent of a shallow grave. John Swinney was sometimes the trigger man. Other times, he dug the hole. Did it never once dawn on Sturgeon to seek out a bank statement or a credit card bill to see how the family finances were bearing up as the luxury goodies were stockpiling?
From the Salmond inquiry to the ferries corruption and, at Sturgeon and Swinney’s orchestration, the deletion of Covid WhatsApps … who could trust anything from this toxic party? It’s hard to believe Operation Branchform would have lasted so long, or cost so much, if everyone in the party had co-operated with the investigation from the off. Remember when Murrell’s mouthy successor as SNP chief exec sneeringly boasted that no-one would be charged – in what appeared to be an attempt to lean on the police? As my party’s former justice spokesman and a journalist who spent years fighting for crime victims, I know how glacial and self-serving Scotland’s justice system is.

The Crown Office has been urged to come clean about why it decided not to charge Nicola Sturgeon alongside her husband in relation to Operation Branchform. The former First Minister has twice insisted her innocence since Peter Murrell pled guilty to embezzling £400k from the SNP. Ms Sturgeon claimed that she had no idea he was embezzling cash from the SNP as they didn't share a bank account and were both independently wealthy. But this defence has been questioned by critics who have queried why she wouldn't ask her husband why he was buying such obviously expensive goods. Concerns were raised during Operation Branchform about the head of the Crown Office, Lord Advocate Dorothy Bain, also sitting within the government Cabinet, and often right beside Ms Sturgeon during meetings. She did recuse herself from any decision being made about the case, but still served as the SNP Executive's main legal adviser.

⚠️ WOLVERHAMPTON CANAL ATTACK
Police have launched an urgent appeal after a woman was sexually assaulted in broad daylight near a canal in Wolverhampton on Sunday afternoon [24th May].
The attack happened near Fox’s Lane at around 3:15pm, with police later cordoning off the Birmingham Main Line Canal while forensic enquiries were carried out.
Officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward - but no suspect description reported.
How are people supposed to come forward with info when they don't know who they're looking for?

ALERT: Rise in 'surrogacy fairs' internationally
Companies are organising fairs dedicated to surrogacy, which we describe as veritable 'baby fairs'.
In response to this explosion in the reproductive market, citizen and feminist initiatives are emerging to denounce and challenge these events.
Please let us know about any local actions, campaigns or tools, arguments or strategies you are aware of.
Please write to us at abolition.surrogacy@gmail.com.
We hope to organise a seminar soon to share experiences on this subject.

The surrogacy court! Surrogacy, an emancipatory issue for women?
On June 10, the Women's University, in collaboration with the international association CIAMS, invites you to one of its "tribunals", offering the public different points of view on a topical subject, in a democratic spirit. This event will focus on surrogate mothers and surrogacy. The event will be placed under this question: does this practice constitute an emancipatory issue for women? During this "tribunal", an adversarial exchange will take place during a mock trial, during which different arguments and opposing opinions are developed by jurists, a major witness and women rights defenders.
The public will be invited to vote as a jury! Come and listen, feed, meet, say!
With:
– Oriana Simone, judge in Brussels, and Jacqueline Herremans, lawyer at the Brussels Bar.
– René Frydman, gynaecologist and obstetrician, University Professor
– Valérie Lootvoet, sociologist, Women's University and Ana-Luana Stoicea-Deram, co-president of the CIAMS.

Peter Bleksley, a former Met Police detective, joins Camilla Tominey and Tim Stanley to discuss whether parents should be held criminally responsible for their children’s crimes. Following the announcement of government plans to revamp parenting orders, Mr Bleksley argues that more discipline is needed in modern parenting and that longer jail terms work as a deterrent for repeat offenders.
David Lammy, the Justice Secretary, revealed the plans last week to give courts extra powers to punish breaches of parenting orders as part of efforts to prevent a repeat of the Southport murders. An inquiry castigated the parents of triple killer Axel Rudakubana for failing to act on his erratic and violent behaviour.

Strawberina and her husband Banannito are expecting. The baby is born, but — shock horror: it’s a zucchini. Banannito breaks down in tears as Strawberina’s twisted affair with the scheming Zuchinito is exposed. We live in bizarre times. For all of the tech industry promises that AI will unlock an age of abundance and innovation, it seems that so far, its greatest achievement is the mass proliferation of AI-slop anthropomorphic fruit TikTok micro-soap operas, which have gained billions of views in just a few months. An infinite tide of AI-generated video is torching our retinas and our souls. Is this it? Is this really the future of culture? An endless torrent of AI slop, engineered by an invisible Slopbeast.
Most agree we should reject the Slopbeast. Humanity is built for greater things than amusing itself to death in TikTok pleasure palaces. However, few agree on how we move forward. The difficulty is that changing culture requires changing norms. Yet, if we have no sense of what should replace our current norms, then the task feels impossible. At both the individual and collective levels, few have any idea what humans ought to be beyond pleasure-seeking machines.

The fact is that if your standard of aesthetic judgement is whether you happen to agree with a novelist or not, the merits of a novel will hurtle, implausibly, from greatness to its opposite, eating up and spitting out a succession of masterpieces as you go. A few decades ago, Huckleberry Finn was considered by some to be the greatest of all American novels. Now you’d sooner find a critic advocating the genocide of the people of Idaho than admitting to admiring it. It appears impossible to the junior curators of a provincial museum that anyone might enjoy and even admire a novel without considering whether they would agree with its author on all subjects. Indian readers were apparently untroubled by Dickens’s views on their society. In the very extensive network of English-language subscription libraries in India in the late 19th century, Dickens remained the third most popular author after Walter Scott and Edward Bulwer-Lytton for decades. The only thing worth saying about the unresisting imbecility of the curators of Rochester is that they are trying to dismiss the savage creator of Wackford Squeers, Old Turveydrop, Mrs Gamp, Uriah Heep and hundreds of others. What a page Dickens would have written about the sanctimonious individuals who take a monthly salary and comfortably denounce one of the greatest novelists who ever lived. Dickens hated hypocrisy and dishonesty more than anything. Here, he would have riches to feast on.

Stop mutilating children full stop.
The decision to circumcise a baby is not some benign act, highlighted by the particularly awful story of Mohamed Abdisamad. At six months old he was circumcised by someone with no medical qualifications. Within days he was unwell and had to be rushed to hospital, where he had a cardiac arrest – a post-mortem identified the cause as a Streptococcus infection picked up during the procedure. Last December, the assistant coroner for West London felt compelled to issue a Prevention of Future Deaths report, warning that without a change in the law, more babies would die the same way. It wasn’t the first such tragedy. Back in 2012, a nurse named Grace Ebun Adeleye was convicted of manslaughter for circumcising a four-week-old boy with scissors and olive oil and no anaesthetic in a home procedure. He bled to death.
There have been 14 recorded deaths in England between 2001 and 2024 with circumcision listed on the death certificate. Half were children. The Office for National Statistics admits the true total is almost certainly higher, since the procedure doesn’t always make it on to the paperwork. The shocking fact most people simply don’t know is that in this country, anyone can circumcise a child. You need no medical training of any kind. Nobody licenses you, nobody inspects you, and there’s no requirement to keep records or bother with infection control. We regulate tattoo parlours more tightly than we regulate the cutting of healthy tissue from a boy’s penis.
We’ve been through something like this before, with female circumcision. For years it went on quietly inside certain communities and barely anyone made a fuss. Then campaigners did something subtly brilliant: they changed the words. Female circumcision became female genital mutilation (FGM), and almost overnight people saw it for what it had always been: a barbaric practice sheltering behind a tidy, medical-sounding name. We banned it. And rightly so. So why can’t we bring ourselves to say the same about boys?

https://thecritic.co.uk/women-should-not-have-to-apologise-for-their-rights/
The battle has been won, now let the shaming of the victors begin. Over a year after the Supreme Court ruling on the meaning of sex, the EHRC’s guidance on single-sex spaces has finally been updated to make it clear that “sex” means “biological sex”. Feminists — or indeed anyone who thinks women are people, too — can rejoice! Only don’t rejoice too much. Actually, don’t rejoice at all. Maybe mutter something about the law being the law, and what can you do about it, perhaps throwing in some platitudes about kindness and empathy, and how women having rights shouldn’t be an excuse to lord it over the people who really deserve them.
It says much about the status of adult human females that news that we get to have anything of our own has come with a massive side order of admonishments not to get above ourselves. Rather than, say, thank the grass roots campaigners who did her job for her, a source close to Bridget Philipson claims that the minister for women and equalities “has ignored the frothing on both sides of the culture war and encouraged EHRC to focus on what matters: the dignity of everyone in our country. She will take no lectures on the rights of women just as she will never punch down on any minority”. Rather than apologise for his 2022 dismissal of “supposed feminists” who had the temerity to want single-sex spaces, Andy Burnham has decided not to object to the current guidance on the basis that to do so would be inconvenient, rather than out of any new-found respect for women.
Over the past few days, I have been outraged at calls for women to be sad-faced and apologetic about having our own toilets. I refuse to be sorry or sad, not least because the status of rights, and how much they are respected, relates to how morally justified they are perceived to be. Contrary to the fantasies of certain “progressive” men, access to female-only spaces will not be policed by genital inspections. This is not because we think the law alone is enough. The law is not enough to preserve women’s safety and dignity in private spaces, either. Laws prohibiting domestic abuse do not stop men from getting away with it, but few would argue that such laws might as well not exist on the basis some men will do it anyways, or even that some will be unhappy if they can’t. We rely on a shared awareness of right and wrong, and an understanding that making potential transgressors feel emboldened or aggrieved puts women at greater risk. By stoking a sense of grievance in those “excluded” from women’s spaces, politicians imply that even if legally one should respect women’s boundaries, morally one doesn’t have to. So some men just won’t.
If women’s rights matter, they are not a thing to be apologised for. If the likes of Andy Burnham and Bridget Philipson are really, truly weary of that which they pompously call “the culture wars”, then they would not perpetuate them by implying For Women Scotland, Kishwer Faulkner and others might have been technically right, but remain guilty of some terrible moral wrong.

Conservative MP Katie Lam quoted a grooming gang rapist in Parliament: “We’re here to fuck all the white girls and fuck the government.” Pakistani gangs systematically raped and trafficked thousands of British girls while authorities did nothing - terrified of being called racist.
This is the brutal result of mass immigration and multiculturalism. British girls sacrificed on the altar of political correctness.

Alia - whose name we have changed for her safety - travelled hundreds of miles from her village to Kabul to escape marriage. The journey by taxi last year with her female cousin - covered from head to toe, only their eyes visible, as the rules decree - was an exceptional thing to do, and risky in Afghanistan, where at any moment they might be caught by the Taliban inspectors enforcing rules banning women travelling long distances without a male relative escorting them. But Alia, who is 19, and her cousin weren't stopped at any Taliban checkpoints, and made it to the capital.
"I made up an excuse to my family saying I was coming here to meet my friends and former classmates. But that's not true. They are not here. The actual reason is that if I stayed in Daykundi, I would be forced to get married." Instead, she arrived in Kabul with a plan: she enrolled in an English language course. These short-term, narrowly-focused private courses - available only to those who can afford them - are, along with madrasas which focus on religious education, the only options for girls to learn past primary school in Afghanistan. But neither are close to being a substitute for formal schooling. It has now been almost five years since the Taliban stopped girls over 12 going to school, with various reasons given to explain why the ban is still in place. Years in which girls like Alia have grown up without the education they wanted and needed. Years in which the path to a career has been effectively shut off, narrowing their options until millions of girls in Afghanistan have been left with just one choice: marriage.

“Concerns involving potential risks to children were put to them in black and white, yet no action appears to have been taken. That is a shocking dereliction of their duty to protect young people. The Greens must urgently explain how this was allowed to happen and who took the decision to ignore these warnings.

With our ever-evolving lexicon of rights, grievances and victimhood, this has escalated to outrageously misogynistic levels. We now face an even bolder claim — that not only is surrogacy a “reproductive right” and “reproductive justice”, but an actual human right. Let me reassure you, there is no domestic or international human rights law anywhere in the world that states that an adult wanting to be a parent gets to be one. What there is, is the right to marry and start a family. Article 12 of the 1998 Human Rights Act incorporated European law into UK law. If there was a rights-based approach to surrogacy, surely this begins with the child? Another international treaty, the Convention on the Rights of the Child states that children have the right to identity, and to know their origins, and ensures that the “sale of or all traffic in children for any purpose or in any form” is banned. These rights include birth registration, a name and, as far as possible, to know and be cared for by their parents. It is designed to protect the child’s right to a family environment and the preservation of family relations, but surrogacy violates this from the outset. Even the preferred model from the Law Commissions would see the mother’s name removed from the birth certificate. Frequently, babies are paid for and moved across borders for parental rights to be secured in the UK. The truth is, these rights of children are politically inconvenient to surrogacy advocates, and have been swept aside, leaving this global market unchecked. But that’s not all. “Reproductive refugee” is a term that is fairly new to me, though I was not surprised to hear it. This label includes those who have to travel abroad in order to afford surrogacy. These poor souls are forced to venture overseas in search of bargain baby deals. As victims due to the costs and logistical nuisances they endure, their “only choice” is to exploit a woman in poorer circumstances than themselves as their homeland fails to support their dreams.
Perhaps my least favourite phase, which requires some linguistic gymnastics, is “Humanitarian Surrogacy”. I first saw this at a surrogacy webinar titled “Wombs without Borders”. The obvious border that cannot be denied is a physical one. A womb is inside a woman’s body, but let’s not let that get in the way. Some believe this barrier must be overcome, to be rescued from a fate worse than war.

Instagram's parent company, Meta, is investigating AI-generated social media accounts that sexualise disabled people appearing on its platform. It comes after the BBC flagged dozens of profiles showing AI-generated images of women with disabilities, including Down's syndrome or vitiligo. Some profiles post fake images and videos of women with missing limbs, visible scarring or in wheelchairs. Many are in sexualised positions, wearing revealing clothing.
Some accounts have amassed hundreds of thousands of followers in a matter of months. One profile, claiming to be conjoined twins, has about 400,000 followers, despite only joining Instagram in December 2025. Kamran Mallick, chief executive of Disability Rights UK, said the emergence of "accounts that fetishise, mock, or monetise the identities of disabled people is nothing short of horrific". He added: "What we have here is technology weaponised to strip disabled people of their agency and dignity, turning our lived experiences into digital caricatures for the profit and titillation of others."
