A middle-aged white cis dude parent from the upper midwest living in southern california doing the "remote work in technology" thing. Perpetually wanting to change some of the above.

I try use CWs for things like parenting. Feel free to point out failure to CW something I should.

Toots: Mostly followers-only, so you might not see much here.

Follows: I have it set to follow-request. Please interact first if I don't know you from somewhere else.

Obligatory: This isn't a work-related account.

My oldest is using the free brilliant.org (math and such) service but I guess it's going well and my partner suggested we get a real/paid account for him. It's $20/mo!

But, this is one of those services that flood youtube with sponsorship codes ("visit brilliant.com/whatever for 30% off!" or whatever).

Does anyone have a good and reputable youtuber/"content creator" who has an active discount code I should use?

:boosts_appreciated:

EDIT: So far Veritasium has one for 20% off which I'll used this evening with my kid to sign up unless someone recommends a better discount and/or person to get the referral reward.

@cwebber I recently heard of the "solo unicorn"* and it is such a dystopian idea.

  • AKA one person company built with ~"AI agents" worth over a $billion.

OK Fedi/nerds. I need a UPS for my NAS/router/modem (only). It's a 4-bay Synology (DS420+) which the data sheet says only 30W when active, so I only need something like 100W and like 5ish minutes (? enough to clean shut down the NAS) of runtime.

So, what do you recommend?

Constraints: The area this stuff is in is very cramped and smaller is great. Obviously I need/want the USB communication feature for the NAS. But otherwise "not stupid expensive" and "not crap without a real company/warranty"

We ended up getting the Bambu Labs A1 mini as our first 3d printer. It arrived when I was on a work trip. This thing is an appliance. Like a toaster that makes pokemon.

OK ya'll. Recommendations on beginner friendly 3D printers.

Yes I'm a decade+ late. But I have kids now and they like building things.

Nothing fancy, but hopefully not too fiddly, if that's reasonable to ask.

Use cases: figurines, functional prints, but fun stuff mostly.

Do I know anyone who uses an electric dumset?

I'm a former drummer. Had a set as a kid but never since leaving for college. Now I have a kid who wants to learn and we have ZERO space for a real set. I'm sad. I hate it in SoCal.

But, if you have any recommendations on what to look for and/or avoid in this space, I would greatly appreciate it.

Boosts OK!

Why does every medical office/group's payment service provider use such sketchy sounding domain names?
