Scrambling the world, one letter at a time.

Software developer / industrial apps.

UNIX-minded person missing HPUX projects with plain C (❤️), shared memory, pointers.
Irony is that I mostly had to work on the platform I dislike the most (MS), ´cause I know the enemy quite well.

Not really a cloud AI enthusiast (To say the least… Let’s watch the bubble explode)

@stefano Seeding 🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻 over Ferrara from a ✈️. Take care & we are here for good & less good moments, sat at tables in the cafe where everyone has things to share. At the end, everybody will get a good smile. Maybe the liquor in the coffee cup will be related to this, (but I am not sure the bsdcafé has a license to distribute alcohol, does it? Well, an hidden bottle will do the trick)

@kiwix @ricardo And would absolutely love the idea of a streamed Wikipedia using decentralized networks, such as chatmail, BitTorrent whatever, activitypub… with content pushed to nodes without barriers. Mirrors everywhere on one’s computer (useful content for display/print, not the whole db content for the article, no the whole history), synced with selected themes. “You want FR page updates for articles about cryptography? Here you go the updates are streamed live to your machine thru p2p”. The day you government blocks your sources of knowledge/info, you have a somewhat fresh content somewhere on your disk. This vague idea/fantasy is not about replacing the existing account/edit/db mecanism, but providing some other distribution scheme which could adapt to censorship using whichever resilient network. @wikimediafoundation

@kiwix @ricardo A more fresh English zim dump may be also useful for Russia, and others. It is resource-expensive, I know, but other parts of the world, such as Europe might also experience some lockdown someday. Be it from our governments, or from global satcom/cable outage. I love the concept of offline zim for a bunch of knowledge resources, but they would need to be kept updated more often. Would a join operation between Wikipedia fondation and Kiwix making use of the database dumps directly instead of scraping would make it less impactful for the Wikipedia structure ? I remember AARdict used the dumps as a source for their compressed content.

@stefano@mastodon.bsd.cafe wow, this post was perfect to fill a wiktionary entry for the word « assholes ». Those “great managers” doing harm so easily by just being dicks. Sorry this reply should not contain obscene words, but as it makes me think about own past experiences, I am probably overreacting… for the remaining of the company, and the team you are collaborating with, it will be a relief. You saved their day(s) by pushing things a little. It escalated, stack overflow. Your position, being prudent, for a new collaboration, is the best one. You secure your work, the company will remember to secure the relationship step by step. Because confidence being broken can’t be resurrected in a click… there is no such thing as “business relation snapshot” to be restored. Green field, built brick by brick again.
