@cartocalypse@norden.social @drgeo@mamot.fr @doctormo@floss.social Right, I believe how the likes of Anubis work is they basically make the client calculate a proof of work problem, for a normal user that means starting at page for some seconds, maybe heating up their device slightly if it's a mobile/thin and light but it's usually fairly painless. For a bot however it makes it a lot more expensive to crawl the site.

Some of them don't politely crawl the site with a slow rate of requests they bombard it causing a DOS/DDOS (overwhelming the site and taking it offline)

@doctormo@floss.social there's probably plenty of people on here that could assist setting it up if needed. I've not tried anubis myself yet as I couldn't think of anywhere it would be useful to me. That said a quick look at the docs suggests it's similar to other applications where you forward traffic through it before hitting the backend application so I'm fairly confident I could get it working if I needed to.

@frog_reborn@mstdn.social @stux@mstdn.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu Well firstly young children should be supervised on the internet, and i'd install web filtering personally but the difference is that's by the parents choice not mandated by a government entity. It's also more to stop accidental exposure rather than stop someone whos delibrately looking for such content. All the current approach do is making people look into circumventions and pushes it underground which doesn't help anyone.

@bloor@bloor.tw if you wanted to start posting media heavy toots you could probably use a CDN or a caching proxy elsewhere to handle the bulk of requests for the image/video whist keeping the origin as the home server. (Only an issue if you were worried about the bandwidth demand from such things)

its all fun and games until an automatic update buggers up the control of all your zigbee devices and half your smarthome doesn't work.
