@cR0w because all it takes is them proving something close to AI works one time and then they can use posts like this to write off large swaths of the anti-AI arguments. As for the AI vs ML conversation, they might as well be interchangeable now, and it's pedantic to pretend otherwise.

@cR0w who's accountable is the same as if a traditional tool automatically blocks something important. You're acting like false positives never happen with traditional automated tools and that just isn't true. If I deploy a protection suite and it decides that there's an issue with a new update on a critical system, it's gonna break that system, that just happens. I understand the hatred of AI, but sweeping statements about it's uselessness aren't helpful in the conversation. 1/2

@cR0w this also doesn't consider user feelings, because false positives are definitely more likely if using an AI or machine learning element, but I tend to err on the side of false positives fine, false negatives bad no matter the impact. Again, this is not apologetics for how garbage and damaging AI companies are, because they are very much both of those things, but from a pure performance and security standpoint, structured, layered use of AI to detect and block intrusions can work fine.

@cR0w I actually disagree on this one, with a caveat. If the AI is only allowed to block, not allow, and is part of a layered system that includes traditional safeties, then there is no practical harm in adding AI to a toolset (AI is bad morally, but that's not my point here). Machine learning has been used to detect IoC's for a while now, I know SentinelOne was announcing that capability around 2019 (the MSP I worked for used them so I got their newsletter). 1/2

@iFixit one thing to note, Warranty Void stickers aren't illegal, which is actually worse. The way it works is: if you break a warranty void sticker, then try and claim warranty, then are denied, you will at that time be able to sue the company for breach of contract (which they can and will use every tool at their disposal to fight, costing a ton of money they know you don't have) and they will not be allowed to use the breached sticker as reasoning in court.

@davidgerard@circumstances.run that's one of the things that pisses me off about the "AI Revolution." I genuinely believe that AI and LLMs are powerful tools that could be used to better humanity. Already there's some incredible work being done in the Cybersecurity arena with AI, for example. But all of the worst people, with the worst agendas, have been handed the reigns. So now this thing that could have been such a boon is being turned into the money machine that runs on orphan blood and I hate it.
