"It looks like a demonstration ship – one designed to satisfy an ego rather than to perform"

... in other words, a 17th-century Cybertruck?

I mainly know about the Vasa because the Swedish post office released a set of stamps in 1969 featuring engravings on the ship and various of its carvings (the stamps themselves were designed by a very famous stamp engraver).

@macross @DJDarren using that analogy... if I was in the market for a widget, and you were selling widgets, and I went to your store to buy a widget, and your store was cordoned off with a big NO ENTRY sign in front of it, I'd go and find another store that sold widgets.

It may not be your fault. But it's the fault of Facebook for being a walled garden.

@macross @DJDarren You may not realise this, but if anyone tries to find your business on Facebook the only thing they will see is this image. Do you still think you're reaching customers?

@FeloniousPunk the entire story of "1999" is "tomorrow we could be obliterated, but don't let that stop us from partying tonight".

It''s also in the background of some of the Oils' 1980s output. "Hammer and the sickle, news is at a trickle, commisars are fickle but the stockpiles grow. Bombers keeping coming, engines softly humming, Stars and Stripes are running for their own big show. Another little flare up, storm brewed in a teacup, imagine any mixup and the lot would go" - "Read About It". "ICBM, SS20, they lie so dormant, they got so many" - "Minutes to Midnight", which isn't the only absolute classic 1980s track based on the doomsday clock.

Geography class, about 1983, we did a quick assessment of what would happen to our town if the Russians decided to bomb a major strategic target about 20 km away. The results would not have been pretty, especially if there was a southerly blowing at the time.

This is your regular scheduled reminder that flood water is toilet water. Don't swim or play in it.

I know that with Wellington the state it's in, it can be hard to tell the difference between sea water and toilet water, but that just means don't swim or play in sea water either.

@Natsura I have direct family connections to Scotland and somewhat less direct family connections to Samoa. The only reasons I don't go around wearing a kilt or a lavalava are that (1) I don't have the legs for it and (2) it's too bloody cold where I am.
