@charette@mstdn.ca Absolutely! I have switched over to named boolean operators about 5 years ago for improved clarity and readability. On top of that, a single '!' or a missing '!' is easily overlooked.

@matus_chochlik @vitaut I know this gulag-y experience from my youth as well: my dad inherited his dad's house in the late 70s, and it became a makeshift construction site for the next three years with my brother, mom, dad, and me impersonating construction workers literally every weekend. On the positive side: it got one of the first air-to-water heat pumps in the early 80s.

@vitaut Welcome to the club! I renovated pretty much the entire interior (except for parts of the heating system) of my parent's house two years ago. Should be good for the upcoming 50 years now, and is prepared for a heat pump instead of burning gas. On to the house next to it. Planned for summer.

@rollbear Seems to match the stereotype. 🙄 Personally, I found *reading* any of written Norwegian, Danish, Swedish (in the order of familiarity to me) quite easy to manageable. *Listening* to any of them, and figuring out the meaning of the sounds as spoken by people on the streets is a completely different level. Last year, at a café in Stockholm, I met a group of Norwegians from an island way up north. We had nice conversations, loved it. But as soon they were talking to each other in their native language, I had huge troubles to even recognize some of the spoken words, lest alone to get the gist of their conversation. So, it doesn't need Danish to get lost in translation 🤭

The std::start_lifetime_as*() functions have constraints that e.g. reinterpret_cast<>() doesn't have:

  • type constraints: https://eel.is/c++draft/mem#obj.lifetime-1

  • position constraints: https://eel.is/c++draft/mem#obj.lifetime-2

The latter is a precondition that could be strengthened and (partially) unconditionally checked for in a hardened standard library implementation.

The former removes affected overloads when the constraints are not satisfied.

I finally made it back home from Madrid, Spain, where the annual 'using std::cpp' conference was held during the past three days!

On day 2, I had my presentation on how to improve build times by concious and judicious use of language features. The slides can be found here, for those who are interested:

https://codeberg.org/DanielaE/Slides/src/branch/main/pdf/same-c++-but-faster-using-std-cpp-2026.pdf

Next stop: Croydon (*Kent*, definitely *not* London as I was assured by a well-known person who grew up nearby in Kent).

This is where C++26 is supposed to be finally baked and delivered, to be then put through a decisive taste test.

@lefticus @rollbear Last year, my colleague returned back home after a visit at a customer site in the US, bragging about the perceivedly wrong code generation that he witnessed due to a customer complaint he was investigating. The pub-quiz like question was asking about "what is wrong with this machine code sequence, coming from these few C++ code lines?"

I instantly found three cases of UB in there, without even digging deeper.

This means:

  • C++ is full of UB traps that average developers have a hard time to see

  • without better education, the situation will hardly improve

  • without putting us committee members more into the shoes of non-cabal devopers, it will deteriorate further

@veronica Thank you for sharing this article! My diploma thesis (in EE sic!) in 1988 was about a classification problem. It used all computing power I could get hold off to run reasonably-sized neural networks and train them. The results were disappointing. Nearly 20 years later, I applied a ML-based clustering algorithm to learn all currently detectable radio emissions from low short wave up to multiple GHz (a SIGINT system on a submarine). The results were good enough to meet expectations. Nearly 20 more years later, such useful ML systems are utterly conflated with overhyped Gen AI, or the fabled AGI. Too many people can't tell those apart, thereby enshittifying our world.

@mp3tag@mastodon.social In other words, this is the strategy we apply in our company applications: To determine the space on the *real* volume that is storing a file, given by a *user-facing* path - possibly starting on a different volume - we follow all symlinks, hardlinks, junctions (i.e. all reparse points) to discover the volume at the other end of the chain as specified by the given file path.

@mp3tag@mastodon.social Thanks - makes sense! In this particular case, volume M is a small partition of my huge storage disk, where some junctions point to the actual directories on the second volume N of said disk. This not-so-common scheme comes from a consolidation of my cold storage onto a single disk where I needed to retain old volume names for compatibility with some software, installed eons ago.

@mp3tag@mastodon.social Florian, that's great! Alas, there's one thing that irks me: whenever I want to edit a file in my music collection, Mp3tag complains about lack of free space, like e.g. "Stellen Sie mindestens 318,28 MB Speicherplatz bereit" - on a disk that TotalCommander reports as "9.815.086.964 k frei von 15.583.645.396 k". Maybe, there's a fix for that some time in the future?

@lesto@hachyderm.io @PeterSommerlad@mastodon.social @alilleybrinker@hachyderm.io "Contemporary C++" is (for the most part) C++17 and beyond plus all the good stuff from earlier versions of the C++ specification that have stood the test of time. If you develop in this (easy to grasp) part of C++, you're safe and can live a happy developer life. But if you need to (and in some industries you inevitably will!) you can leverage backward compatibility without reaching out to the unsafe, mostly ancient parts of C++ or C by yourself.

@lesto@hachyderm.io @PeterSommerlad@mastodon.social @alilleybrinker@hachyderm.io What was an interesting moniker for a talk was picked up by people in the audience (like Bjarne) and others, and caught some traction. "Modern C++" was a thing - the shiny new features (and design approach) in the early 2000s. Nobody would call this "modern" anymore despite some ideas still falling into the "contemporary" bucket. And then C++11 with a completely new way of thinking - called "post-modern" by some. Some of that is still "contemporary".

@lesto@hachyderm.io Glad you asked 😊

"contemporary C++" is a term that I came up with to describe as succinctly as possible what I intended to convey to the audience in my keynote last year at CppCon. It is deliberate to not have a precise definition. "Contemporary" implies change over time, that's the whole point!

@hniemeyer@mastodon.social @PeterSommerlad@mastodon.social @alilleybrinker@hachyderm.io I think there is way too much politics at play here. And dishonesty. Nobody cares as long as funding gets diverted to their direction and pockets. Funding is nice as long as you can stay in the general and don't have to prove anything. A smear campaign directed at people who are not challenged by knowledge or realities helps, ofocz. If such campaigns are in full spin, people can become upset.

@PeterSommerlad@mastodon.social @alilleybrinker@hachyderm.io The last sentence in that document summarizes that quite well: "For applications where safety or security issues are paramount, contemporary C++ continues to be an excellent choice." Using *contemporary C++* ruled out *all* memory safety problems (and more) that I've been haunted by before embracing such design approaches ten years ago. It's not the language, it's the mindset. Subverting safety in "safe" languages? Been there, done that. None was really safe.

@nixCraft Sure, I do. But who remembers Turbo Pascal 1.0 on CP/M? It was such a revelation and joy to work with.
