@elliot@social.lgm.ltd True (mastodon.social was my third instance), but experience of human nature suggests a significant number - even a majority - won't move on. The bigger this one gets, the more it feels like CSM, and a lot of new arrivals are just looking for a new Twitter.

@alexjsp@mastodon.social It's unlikely to be a direct hack of your account. More likely to be either a "tame" IG employee working with those who sell "desirable" handles, or some social engineering - and involving SIM swaps - that gains them access to admin privileges such as changing email and passwords. (I did a long-term investigation of influencers and platform manipulation, particularly on Twitter but also Insta, and spoke to a lot of people about their methods.)

I've seen a lot of posts in the past few days worrying about the slowdown of Fediverse growth - especially that people appear to have tried it and left again.
Many of the arrivals were people seeking to switch from one car marque to another. What they found is a place that prefers bicycles. They'll be back when they realise the true dangers - and, if not, the Fediverse will be fine without them.
