@eingemaischt@chaos.social @tinker@infosec.exchange The firewall is a tad overzealous (it blocks a lot search engines other than Google and Bing, for example).
My university also has a lot of cybersecurity students (such as myself) who enjoy playing with our infrastructure (I have better things to do). They used to DDoS the network once a year to celebrate the end of exams, until they were told to stop.

@dalias@hachyderm.io @tinker@infosec.exchange It's not HTTPS that I'm worried about. I may have mentioned the wrong type of attack.
One example of a vulnerability I found was on the WiFi in my old student halls. The entire site was on one subnet, seemingly with no separation. I could ping PlayStations on the other side of the building and turn people's speakers on at 3AM, all from the comfort of my own room using nothing more than an Android tablet. This didn't fill me with confidence about other aspects of the network.

@tinker@infosec.exchange I used to also use a VPN alongside Mullvad Browser for privacy reasons; but now that I've switched to Tor Browser, this is redundant.
Self-hosting a VPN or proxy would be too expensive for me, as I am a student who's paying through the nose for rent, bills, and groceries, and who isn't currently employed.
It would also mean I can only exit in one country, which would make it difficult to circumvent Google's bullshit.

@tinker@infosec.exchange I use a VPN to avoid the UK's internet restrictions, circumvent my university's overzealous firewall, and use SkyTube (Google has crippled it in most countries, but switching my apparent location to, say, Vietnam usually works).
