@jbhall56@infosec.exchange @Walrus@toot.wales Overheard a group of older people in a pub shutting down some students a few years ago. “These elders don’t know how computers work.” “Excuse me young man, all your bank transfers run on COBOL code I wrote.”

@jbhall56@infosec.exchange Yes, I was in hospital a year ago when a young trainee paramedic on the ward saw my laptop and mobile phone and said "I see you like your tech". I was so tempted to tell him I was programming in machine code long before he was born. Not all "old people" are computer naive!

@jbhall56@infosec.exchange it's not whether we're tech savvy or not. it's that we're not tech trusting. ;)

@jbhall56@infosec.exchange

People in their 50's and 60's are tech savvy, and aren't tech-gullible like the clueless kids getting addicted to #aiSlop to the point where their brains are attrophying.

  • they'll have to use #ai to explain that word to them.

@Captain_Jack_Sparrow@mastodon.world @jbhall56@infosec.exchange My dad retired a few years ago. They now have to hire him back at extortionate rates he decided to charge because all the youths don’t understand ADABAS.

@jbhall56@infosec.exchange Bjarne Stroustrup is 75 and still working while DMR would be 85 if he hadn't retired and then died at 70. Brian Kernighan is 84, still maintaining the reference version of AWK and Ken Thompson 83, working as an advisor at Google. I'm in my late 60s, I hope I still understand computers when I'm as old as Brian and Ken are now.

@jbhall56@infosec.exchange Ok, but also: who gave the internet away to American corporations? In complete naive obliviousness?

@jbhall56@infosec.exchange Yeah… a few years ago, I figured younger generations must surely be more tech-savvy, since computers were cheap and everywhere. But during my work, I actually noticed I was often much more tech-savvy than younger colleagues, many of whom were comfortable using pre-installed programs but had little experience going beyond them. Most OSes—especially on phones—seem to steer people toward being users/consumers/renters rather than operators/owners.

@jbhall56@infosec.exchange Fact I was super tech savvy when younger. Now that I am in the "beyond" category I struggle to use my phone. Thankfully my daughter-in-law is a techie and I reside with her and my son. The computer which I am using to communicate here was built by me in 2008. I could not do this now.
