People are always hating on old painted #ScienceFiction and #Fantasy covers, or new ones in this old style, but I love them, and a great painted cover attracts me to a book, as opposed to turning me away. What are some of your favorite old (or newer) painted #SciFi or fantasy #books covers? #bookstodon @bookstodon #SpeculativeFiction

@msprout @bookstodon this cover of Rama II, which I’ve still never read, nor Rendevous with Rama, captivated my imagination as a kid.

@killick @bookstodon these are lovely, and I had no clue he did those himself! I may try and find copies of this edition. My first #Hobbit / #LordOfTheRings experience was this terrible cover, that despite nostalgia I have no soft spot in my heart for. #Fantasy #Bookstodon #LoTR

I find it really weird how consistently uninterested in & standoffish from #Library workers library friends group members seem to be; it's been consistent across the four public library systems I've worked at. I appreciate them, but find it so weird they never seem interested in connecting with or being generally polite to staff, just do their own disconnected meetings and projects. Is this normal? #librarian #librarians #libraries #LibraryWorkers

#Kagi & #Mojeek #search have actually transformed the internet for me. I'm encountering so many more in-depth, thoughtful human-written blog articles on every subject I search, as well as engaging with parts of the internet that are older than a few years old. It's such a richer experience than #Google provides in recent years, especially for #books discussions and engaging with minority religious voices and #disabled communities. #bookstodon @bookstodon #disability #sea...

Something about the Atevi, aliens with emotions, morals, philosophy, duty, aspirations, but no love, no passions, no friendship, in #CJCherryh's #Foreigner series deeply reminds me of beloved R. Daneel Olivaw from #IsaacAsimov's robot novels, who sans emotions, nurtures by logic & morality the growth & flowering within himself of an all-encompassing love for humanity, a deep love and dedication to his friends. #sciencefiction #bookstodon @bookstodon #scifi #Foun...

I'm trying to create some resources for school-age #children at my #library to explore websites other than Roblox. Anyone have any suggestions about sites that have engaging activities for 7-13 year olds that don't feel didactic or moralizing, and are actually fun or interesting? #librarians #libraries #internet #kidlit #education #gaming

@abetterjulie it’s always going to be #ShirleyJackson’s #WeHaveAlwaysLivedInTheCastle for me! See image for full text of the first paragraph. It’s too long, but the first paragraph is an atomic thing that shouldn’t be chopped up.

Trying to remember a #SciFi novel where first contact aliens are deeply confused by atheism among humans because all their science/math/philosophy is based on theism, I think sans any sort of religion, and with the implication it’s biologically encoded in the functioning of their minds. I remember it being very good, and recommended to me as a young atheist by my atheist dad. #ScienceFiction #Books #bookstodon #whatsthatbook @bookstodon

I’m probably sticking with #Mastodon until there’s a more stable server available, but #Calckey is pretty awesome. Longer limits, betters lists, antennae (sorta like extra, tuneable timelines), and MARKDOWN! And still compatible with all the same #Fediverse/#ActivityPub services. And you can even migrate your follows, pretty cool. I also love my particular instance, #SocialCoop for more than just tech reasons, so I’d probably not just leave here for markdown, but it’s been cool to check out.

Saw a comment today that said essentially, #StarTrek is canceling #StarTrekDiscovery and #StarTrekProdigy, the only two shows exploring new ideas in the Star Trek Universe, making Trek into another franchise running on nostalgia, running on fumes, and I couldn't agree more.
