I was nearly an adult when I discovered Tolkien and I had kids of my own by the time Harry Potter published. Tolkien was a language nerd and I kind of identify with that. I even liked Rowling until we found out who she was. But I've never had a problem confusing an author with their works or an actor with their characte...

  @0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange I have often used telnet for network and server diagnostics, and I use it occasionally for bulletin board systems on the internet. But I have never needed to install Telnetd in the last 20 years. But if I needed to tomorrow, I would remember this.

  @rubenerd@bsd.network Cowards. Fearing what is different or unexpected is understandable, but only to a point. Once it is not new and not unexpected, there is no longer reason to fear. At least not if you're a normal adult. It doesn't make sense to go through your entire life being so fearful of the people around you. And yet, they embrace that fear. I would feel sorry for them if they were not so obnoxious.

Congress has been offloading power onto the president that they should have held in their own hands ever since World War II. I don't understand why anybody thought that was a good idea, but apparently a lot of congressmen thought that was a good idea.

  @rubenerd@bsd.network Also "cool" is situational at best, and at any case is a matter of opinion. I think a lot of retro things were and are really cool. And you do, although we're not always talking about the same retro things. Although I'm sure there are times when each of us is wrong, I don't think there's ever a time when either of us is wrong about that.
