I'm adding hover cards for the meta data section in the @novelwriter@fosstodon.org editor panel. It shows the tag, display name, document (or section) title, and the summary description. I hope this will save me for having to open those files all the time just to check a few details! #OpenSource #Qt #Python #Coding

Checking my emails frequently now to see if my order has been shipped. π I really want to watch the series now after having binged House of the Dragon. I watched the first season of Game of Thrones in HD, but I want to wait for the 4K boxset now. π #TV #Fantasy #GameOfThrones #HouseOfTheDragon

In the season 5 episode "Whispers" of Stargate Atlantis, guest star Nicole de Boer as Dr. Porter (also Ezri Dax from Star Trek DS9) makes a little Star Trek reference in a scene with Paul McGillion (Dr. Beckett). Becket: What brings you here to the Pegasus Galaxy? Porter: Well, you can just chalk that up to my sense of adventure, a desire to visit strange, unexplored worlds, meet new and interesting people ... Nice one π #Stargate #StarTrek #SciFi

I couldn't sleep, so I got up at 5 am this morning. To kill some time before work, I wrote a new Python-based proof of concept for Copy Fail based on the original, but one that is easier to read (I don't care about the byte size bragging rights) and which does not push a payload into the page cache of a setuid exec (which is bad). Instead it just overwrites text on a temp text file. It works great! I got the idea from the copy-fail-c implementation on GitHub. #CopyFail #Linux...

I'm on yet another rewatch of Stargate SG-1, and I just watched O'Neill explain to Thor how big the fish are in his favourite spot in Minnesota. Now I want an episode where O'Neill and Thor are fishing in Minnesota, and O'Neill is trying to explain the point of fishing to an alien race that eats small coloured cubes of food for their meals. π #SciFi #Stargate #StargateSG1

I recently posted this, but since it is #TerryPratchett Day, I'm reposting. If my text editor app @novelwriter@fosstodon.org crashes (Offler forbid), it will use one of the following Discworld error messages as the window title of the error dialog. π π§ββοΈ

I think Hegseth quoting fake bible passages from Pulp Fiction, presumably because he doesn't know they're made up, perfectly illustrates the role of religion in right wing extremist politics. It's a tool to control the masses. Nothing more. In that respect, I am in 100% agreement with the pope. I'm an atheist, but I grew up in a Christian community. US and Israeli violence is not in line with the core message. (Although there are people in my old community who s...

There has been an uptick in donations to my @novelwriter project lately. To the few of those who see this, I really appreciate it. π While it doesn't cost a lot to run this project, I've more or less broken even so far. I was ahead a little in 2023, so I spent that on commissioning some artwork for the project. I spend about 500h a year on novelWriter, and I still haven't made any money for myself from it. That's not a problem though. I'm doing fine. π T...

The storm "Dave" is scheduled to hit here in Western Norway in about 8 hours, peaking at 22 m/s (43 knots) with 40 m/s (78 knots) gusts at around 2-3 PM tomorrow according to current forecasts. We have a red weather warning. We get a lot of storms in the 20 m/s range here, but not often with gusts that strong. I need to prepare a few things before it hits. I'm wondering if my neighbour's trampoline will survive. They're away it seems. π¬ #Storm #Dave #W...

For two days now I've been trying to write, but ended up making changes to my writing app instead. Finally, I got a good chunk of writing done, just now. I wrote a scene in 1st person to see if it works for my WIP. I do prefer that style, but I fear it may be a little too limiting for my story. I will give it a try at least. I'm testing to see if it works with the protagonist in 1st person, and the few scenes I have from other POVs in 3rd person. I'm very uncertain of t...

I have never noticed Dracthyrs dancing in World of Warcraft until last night when I made my character dance in a group with two others while we were waiting for a mob to spawn. I like it a lot. π I was playing Lady Gaga at the time too, and the dance fit the music really well. #WorldOfWarcraft #WoW #Dancing #Dragon #Dracthyr

Me today: * I'm gonna sit down and do some writing. * Opens my writing app. * Realises it's annoying that I have to press the Tab key before I can select which project to open using the arrow keys, then multiple Tab presses to move back to the Open button. * Writes a pull request on the app that forwards the up/down keys to the project list and adds Enter and Return as a way to open a project directly from the list. * Did not get any writing done. Maybe tomorrow? π #OpenSourc...

Good thing I'm by myself, because I've been on the floor in my hallway testing various ways to get upright while imagining my left leg is injured. π I needed to write a scene in my book where one of my characters do just that. I hope I managed to make it realistic even though I don't have the pain to go with it when testing different techniques. #WritingCommunity

A good piece on how GenAI is flooding the field. I too have worked with ML for a while and feel similarly. "Having done my PhD on AI language generation (long considered niche), I was thrilled we had come this far. But the awe I felt was rivaled by my growing rage at the flood of media takes and self-appointed experts insisting that generative AI could do things it simply canβt, and warning that anyone who didnβt adopt it would be left behind." https://www.technologyreview.com/2025/1...
