  Even though the styling of iOS 27 is much improved in places over iOS 26, using it alongside an iOS 18 phone I’m still not convinced that the new design actually solves any problems at all. I regularly get the feeling of my screen looking so messy, because there is just no visual structure when UI looks like it is randomly floating in a sea of content/other UI. Apple can refine the styling all they want, but I don’t think *this* is fixable. Proper toolbars and tab bars need to come back.

  I look at old software and I see: diverse, creative, crafted, often joyful designs, that were also incredibly functional. It felt like there truly was a permission to explore, to play. I look at current software and I overwhelmingly see: homogenous, bland, rushed, often sad designs. Even the functionality does not nearly always redeem them, as it's being abstracted and hidden away in the name of minimalism. What the systems and tools allow is narrowing down all the time. Just take me back.

  Now that I’ve had the iPhone Air in my hands for a couple of days, hardware-wise it’s a very cool device. The size/thinness/weight ratio feels surreal. I chose it as a work phone because while none of Apple’s current devices are a good fit for me, might as well get something that’s a bit special. The 13 mini will remain my personal, primary device and I prefer it by a large margin. It’s kind of funny how the mini almost fits in the flat area underneath the “iconic plateau” of the Air.

  I’ve been using Ecosia as the search engine on all my devices for a bit. It’s one of the few alternative search engines Apple list in Safari, and it’s surprisingly decent. I will be continuing this experiment.

  Cherry blossom was so beautiful in Copenhagen this year, as usual. Seeing the sun bring out the soft pink hues is just magic. One of the best spots for hanami around here is at Bispebjerg cemetery.

  Apple love to preach "the UI gets out of the way of your content" with each new redesign, but how true is that in practice? Let's compare the total height of the Safari UI with a toolbar, favourites bar and tab bar visible, across the three latest Mac OS design languages – Yosemite, Big Sur and now Tahoe. I've added a red line for emphasis. It sure looks to me like the UI is eating more into my content with each redesign.

  Mockup time! What could be a reasonable "middle ground" between the Mac OS design that we have today and the radical Liquid Glass design we saw this week from #WWDC25? Disclaimer: this does not attempt to solve all the issues of modern Mac OS design, such as cramped toolbars caused by full-height sidebars and combining the toolbar with the title bar. I feel like the Apple of today is too far gone to do anything about those. Read on to see what I actually tried to address.

  Many things in Apple’s new UI design language get bigger when you interact with them, and I just find it so odd. It’s relatively harmless (though annoying) with things like sidebars, but there are some elements where this actively interferes with what you’re trying to do. As an example, in the Music app, the your current position in the seek bar is different when mouse button is up vs. when it’s down. The player bar in Music is in general one of the grossest UI I’ve seen on the Mac recently.

  @atpfm On the latest episode, Marco speculated that the reason why Suunto’s app is better than Garmin’s could be due to Suunto being a younger company. I don’t have insight into why the apps for each are the way they are, but Suunto is in fact more than 50 years older than Garmin, founded in Finland in 1936, whereas Garmin was founded in 1989.

  We’re at Mac OS 26.4 and seems like the accessibility toggles should be way more considered than they are. Here’s a comparison between “Reduce transparency” off and on. How does it make sense that turning this setting *on* actually *reduces* contrast between the background and the UI elements? Buttons and sidebars get this grey cast, which makes them almost blend in with the drop shadows.

  I've been thinking about the cabinet for #smallPinball project lately. If I build a 1:2-scale thing that tries to mimic a traditional pinball machine, it's bound to appear toy-like, which I'm trying to avoid. The solution could be to "change the meaning" of the cabinet.   I spent maybe 30 seconds today clicking on the “Search” in the sidebar wondering why it wouldn’t let me type into it… until I realised that isn’t the search field at all. I guess I should stop using computers because I apparently can’t tell a heckin text field apart from a button anymore.
