There's a real pent-up demand for a Linux distribution as nicely made as Fedora or Elementary, but focused on providing a more classic, retro experience but *with* all the modern amenities. I have high hopes for things like cow, which brings a classic fvwm experience to Wayland: https://codeberg.org/thomasadam/cow Building something from components myself costs time I'd rather spend with my kids, or, I don't know, shoving shards of glass underneath my fingernails.

>Editor’s note: This is an English translation of an interview originally published on FabScene, a Japanese web media outlet covering hardware, digital fabrication, and maker culture. Context has been added for readers unfamiliar with Japan’s electronics scene. A translation is a work of art. If you do actually get a real translator - and it seems they actually did here - name them. Credit them. I know I'm fighting a battle long lost, but as someone with two university degrees in transl...

The Twingo should be heralded as one of the greatest cars ever made. Making an amazing car that costs €100000 is easy. Making an amazing car that costs €8000 is out of this world. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKEhA6IHtGE

The root cause of every single problem in the west is wealth inequality. Every single one of them. Scratch between the surface of every problem, and you'll find wealth inequality. That's why the billionaire class tries so hard to blame everything on migrants or trans people or whatever the fuck - they know that once people realise wealth inequality is the real root cause, billionaires will be the first on the chopping block. We've done it before, and we will do it again. They know t...

The nazi politician in parliament attacking trans people. The priest in church denouncing gay marriage. The christian political leader arguing against a ban on conversion torture. The imam in a mosque lambasting the LGBTQ community. The youths attacking LGBTQ people in our streets. The deranged lunatic driving his car into a pride event. The underlying ideology doesn't matter. Anti-LGBTQ rhetoric should be a severe crime punishable by jail time, whether it's coming from a religious lead...

Build new rails works for both real infrastructure as it does for digital infrastructure. 🤷♀️ I can't do shit but boost and applaud. Once these people have a more permanent home (website) and some work to show, I'll see if it makes sense for a post on @osnews@mstdn.social. https://mastodon.me.uk/@Floppy/116997766777309382

Idea: some game involving us weirdos on Fedi and randomising AliExpress purchases (below €10 of course, it has to be fun) using AliExpress's absolutely wild algorithm. This idea has legs, but needs shoes. There's something here that could be dumb enough to be fun. I feel like @catsalad@infosec.exchange would be able to flesh this out.

I really despise what libadwaita has done to the GTK ecosystem. Unless you're okay with applications that look, feel, and behave entirely differently, the only GTK desktop still worth using is GNOME. For anything else, you're going to have to tolerate a massive schism on your desktop. Most people don't care. They are used to the web and iOS being inconsistent, confusing, unusable trashfires. It's the current normal in UI "design". I'm not blaming anyone either. Th...

Not this nonsense again. Android is Linux just as much as Arch is Linux. This is what I wrote about that in *checks notes* 20-fucking-13: https://www.osnews.com/story/27277/android-is-linux/ I can't believe people are still arguing about this as *wildly flails and points at everything*

lol mastodon.art blocks the Fedi instance of the Dutch government because apparently the Dutch government is fascist? You'll find few Dutch people particularly excited about any of our governments over the past quarter of a century, but they're decidedly not fascist. I forgot about the clown show of .art because I have that hateful trashfire blocked for years now, and apparently nothing's changed on that front. https://mastodon.art/@JuniPers/116963045988658976

I actually already do this. I actively try to be a little bit more personal, quirky, and weird in my OSNews writing here and there - showing a little bit more of the real me here and there. In small doses, though. None of y'all consented to a full dose. https://mstdn.social/@MaryAustinBooks/116959049411892194

The fact that protest and free speech in Ukraine can and is having clear and direct effect is the reason Ukraine will eventually decidedly win. It works as an amazing correcting force whenever Zelensky does one of his dumbass moves, and makes it far more likely that the right people end up/remain in the right places. Social media actually plays a positive role here. The distance between the people in the trenches and the home front is a hell of a lot shorter than in the past because of it. Unha...
