  I self-host services at home, but I don't want to expose my home IP to the world. I also don't want my server to be hammered.   Posts auto-deletion is such an underrated feature of Mastodon. I’m not the same person I was one, two, or five years ago. Heck, I’m not even the same person I was a month ago. It’s easy to post whatever crosses your mind, and I’m glad Mastodon makes it easier to timebox it.

  People are slowly realizing that Android only weaponized open source licenses but was always meant to be a captive platform, like people are slowly realizing that VS Code has open source code but is a captive platform. Open source licences are not enough. They’re regularly weaponized as a tech enthusiast trap.

  Whether it is my Kobo or other ebook related projects, almost all have stats and goals, a feature you can’t disable. I read to escape the world. I read to travel to parallel universes, to futures that may not exist. I read to go an adventure. I have enough KPIs and goals in my life, I don’t want productivity measurements in my downtime. #books #reading #kobo

The other big news are their plans to specify how instances will be able to share services, called FASP. And €90K will be shared with other projects to make sure FASP is not a Mastodon-only feature. Good people working in the general public’s interest. Also kudos to @sovtechfund for funding it.

  I think I’ve put my finger on why the discourse about AI on Mastodon grates me. All the posts I see do nothing but reinforce the feeling of powerlessness. All leave me wondering “and what now?” Does anyone write about the geopolitical implications of it? Are there groups organizing to think about how to improve the situation? I think we’ve had our fair share of rants against AI, they’re not helping anymore.

  You apply a deployment on your cluster, the pod crashes, you describe the pod and everything seems fine. You’d need to have a shell into the container, but you can’t because it has already crashed and exited.   On the fediverse we could do collectively better at not shooting down initiatives. It’s a bit demoralizing to see someone announce their project, only for a mob to come and tell them they’re wrong and they should never have started it. I’m not saying we should accept the unacceptable. I’m saying we should embrace imperfection to go in a better direction.

  Some see the end of Sora as the end of LLMs in general, and I don’t think that is true. Sora was expensive and not remotely useful or engaging. It wasn’t monetizable like YouTube. It pains me to admit but some models like Anthropic’s can sometimes be useful. They’re widely used and some people pay money for them, admittedly at an unsustainable price. The end of AI has been announced for years. It remains possible that the bubble doesn’t pop but slowly deflates. This is not me praising AI.

  I can understand why devs who understand what they’re doing and who review their output can be tempted to use LLMs to speed up some work. But C-suite people getting high on AI will tank some companies in the next few years.

He single handedly built the website and the bot to curate reports. Massive props to him for that!

  The @gnome Foundation has created a program to fund direct contributions to GNOME, especially on the maintenance side. This is excellent news, and it will make people who "only want to fund development" happy. I also wanted to highlight that GNOME is first and foremost a community.   Somehow, it was simpler and cheaper to install a touchscreen, display an image of a finger touching a circle that contains a fingerprint, print a label that says “please get a ticket and go to the waiting room” than… just putting an obvious physical push button.
