I think I’ve put my finger on why the discourse about AI on Mastodon grates me. All the posts I see do nothing but reinforce the feeling of powerlessness. All leave me wondering “and what now?” Does anyone write about the geopolitical implications of it? Are there groups organizing to think about how to improve the situation? I think we’ve had our fair share of rants against AI, they’re not helping anymore.

@thibaultamartin@mamot.fr i am trying to go against the sense of hopelessness and trying to organize people to actually reach out to projects and get full genai bans in place to reach out to others and form a unified front, including all affected professions, against all of this abusive technology, with the goal of pushing it away as much as possible i don't at all believe the situation is hopeless, the hopelessness rhetoric (genie is out of the bottle, can't stop progress, bla bla) is just a tactic by the tech industry to push its bs through

@thibaultamartin@mamot.fr good point, everybody is only repeating how terrible it all is... Completely polarized discussion, where many people are in complete denial about added value and widespread use...

@thibaultamartin@mamot.fr @andnull@social.nouveau.community we would look outside of the tech circles for this. like, go out into your local community. the tech circles frustrate us too, because everyone just says "Well i was forced to use it at work" and uses that as justification to bring it home. and because the largely white-privileged tech industry is actively against the concept of labor solidarity, we're not going to find a solution here.

@thibaultamartin@mamot.fr Regulation-wise the AI Act already answered most then-open questions from the start this time vs. e.g. GDPR which bolted things on after it was already too late, else I'd expect there to be far more discussion about policy changes rn

@thibaultamartin@mamot.fr one aspect to consider is that (like all social action) we don't always post about the other steps we're taking. I am very vocal against the use of LLMs in my profession, but i do that in person and in professional fora. I state my opinion on the matter every time it comes up, and if necessary i make it embarrassing for people to admit that they use them or advocate for their use. I attend meetings to object to the zoning and power infrastructure changes that would enable *even more* datacenter development in my area. I learned all these tactics here on fedi.
