  I'm using 'sysupgrade' to update my RasPi1 from #NetBSD 11.0rc4 to 11.0rc7 and the extraction of the sets is very slow, at about 0.5 MiB/sec. it's not CPU bound and this is on a brand new industrial SD card. I have to wonder if there aren't a ton of optimizations left on the floor somewhere in the data path of the type which tend to end up added to Linux because the codebase has a ton of eyeballs on it.

  good, good, the magic-wormhole relay server blocks me from connecting in yet another "yeah we just discriminate against all data center IPs, fuck you bye" fail, what's the full-p2p alternative again? I've always thought magic-wormhole's setup relying on a centralized relay was janky.

  I ordered a dynamo headlight for my bike to replace the chintzy incandescent unit, and some 6-30VAC LED drop-in replacement bulbs for the tail light (hope they work, I'll have to find 3-n VAC bulbs if they don't work at low speeds, or wire in a capacitor), and a couple amber side lights, with some catsitting proceeds. it's only once in a while that catsitting involves riding my bike at night, but my current situation - dim incandescent dynamo system, 1x AA flashlight up...

  had a task in Tasks.org to make a Tasks.org feature request for a combined list view, but when I went searching for pre-existing tickets, I learned that Filters accomplish this. so yay for that.   got a replacement fan+heatsink unit coming in tomorrow for the Thinkpad, which I've mostly been using in a very reduced way so it doesn't overheat when the fan temporarily seizes up.

  didn't work on the laptop yet because reasons (I've been struggling lately, hence the reduced posting frequency and no progress on projects) and I might not do it today because I stayed up all night to try to push my sleep cycle forward, and so I don't want to accidentally break something. I may however set the NanoPi and the old reconstituted server up on the covfefe table I cleaned off yesterday.

  if I had tons of disposable income I'd have an IP KVM in the #CouchLab just so I don't have to mess with hooking up this extremely long HDMI cable every time something breaks badly enough to require console access on a physical host.

  confirmed the new server is still up. here's a fun one: it's the NIC that's *not* connected to anything that crashed, which seems to have also taken down the NIC attached to the physical network somehow. 👀

  meanwhile, remember what I said about how common trash NICs and/or NIC drivers are, even in motherboards, even from manufacturers like Intel? yeah, this has been an outstanding bug with the Intel NIC in the system in question which hasn't been fixed in kernel drivers for many years at this point. so it's not *only* USB NICs which are terrible. I should have known to check what built-in NIC the new system has, given how frequently I've had to deal with this over the year...

  I gotta get a 2nd replacement battery for my Poco F1 like 3 years after the first replacement, obviously I really lucked out on that first replacement. aftermarket batteries are such a gamble. at this point I'm just about ready to buy one on eBay since at least there you can directly check a bunch of feedback.   looking at a 2.5GbE card that fits in an A+E key m.2 2230 slot and wisely this time I searched the chip on Proxmox forums - surprise - another garbage NIC from Intel I know it'll likely never come out, but I'd love to read an industry insider breakdown of why Intel NICs in the consumer segment have been complete crap for many years now.

  lol, never mind, the average asking price that was $100 two days ago is now $150. I got fucked because New Town Spares, Inc refused to honor the price on their site which is STILL UP as of now. turns out it was a used drive anyway, which wasn't mentioned anywhere on the listing. I'm gonna have to re-jigger my plans because I can't afford even one of these at this rate, let alone two. thanks, Sam Altman!

  I'm so mad about this, these scumbags also have a hold on my card, did I mention they offered me a "discounted price" at more than 4x what was listed on their website?! and now because my ass is broke, I can't order a different unit until that hold clears. I'm looking at my options, might be able to snag a 750GB drive with less cache for the amount I'd still have available if the hold is cleared.

  I'm doing well enough with my New Year's resolution to limit viewing of true trash content on Youtube to 20 min a day, that I think I'll step it up by declaring 1 day a week Peertube-only day. I like to watch a video while I eat, might as well put some actual time into branching out and discovering creators on #Peertube, especially since I technically am one now... (that resolution the only one I'm doing well with, but who's counting)
