Gahhh look who's back! I'm so in love, OMG. 🫠🥰 I’ve been away dogsitting for a week and wondered if that would be the end of it, but NOPE. 🖤✨ This friend flew from the tallest redwood to the East, circled me, and then, when I held up a handful of walnuts, landed in the redwood right by the deck and peeked around to watch me lay out nine nuts. They did the water-dunking thing again, too: dropped a couple of the nuts in the birdbath before eating them. I just tried it and can’t tell what...

“What is intelligence? For the US biologist Michael Levin, who leads the Levin Lab at Tufts University, when we think of intelligence only in terms of what brains in bodies can do, we’re projecting our own biases onto the world. Instead, he argues, intelligence is the capacity to pursue goals, and it exists on a continuum that ranges from cells to humans. In this short documentary from Quanta Magazine, Levin explains how his lab tests how lifeforms at different scales of complexity adapt to nove...

“At first, users may be drawn into a relationship with an AI companion because they feel validated. But, over time, people consistently perceive human empathy as more emotionally satisfying and supportive. . . . “ ‘We don’t just want to be understood,’ Perry told me. ‘We want to feel felt. We want to know that the other person is genuinely present with us, that they might share in our emotions, and that they care enough to put in the effort to actually connect.’ ” https://psyche.co/ideas/why-w...

“Prison forced me to stop moving, and it didn’t do it gently or by choice. It stripped away distraction until there was nothing left but time and thought. I didn’t find serenity. I found awareness. I learned what my anger feels like before I act on it. I learned how fear shows up in my body. I learned that between impulse and reaction, there is a small space, and, inside that space, I get to choose.” https://psyche.co/turning-points/in-the-stillness-of-prison-i-learned-how-to-be-alone

“Initially, Leah Wilson had no idea why the sky above her house was full of crows. Then, she and her neighbors discovered that a crow had become stuck in her home’s gutter. She enlisted the help of the local fire department to save the bird, then drove it to a wild animal rehabilitation center. A few days later, the center told her that the crow had been released back into the wild. But that wasn’t the end of the story. When walking her dog around the neighborhood, Wilson says a crow swooped dow...

#3GoodThings • The birds who built a nest in my tent (open on one end) while I was away have continued to care for their babies even though they’re scared of the big intruder (me, making myself as nonthreatening as possible). • I’m going down to San Francisco tomorrow for an overnight trip, with hotel paid, so I can help a friend pull herself together for her granddaughter’s wedding. • Today I lay for a long time—even dozed a little—in sunlight on the forest floor, which felt like food when I...

Anybody know of an image I can print—or a small painting or little figurine or other art, if affordable or for trade—of the Virgin/Mother Mary that might appeal to an animist pagan? I’d like one for one of my altars. No plastic unless it’s secondhand, and no AI. EDIT: Also no Amazon or eBay or their ilk. Small (or at least ethical) businesses only. #VirginMary #MotherMary

We take you to the website for Fox 101.9, a radio station in Melbourne, Australia, where ‘Web Guy Josh’ has published a peppy, harmless instructional post for the making of an ‘Amazing Rainbow Tie-Dye Number Surprise Cake.’ “ And then the flame war begins. 🤣 https://deadspin.com/rainbow-cake-recipe-inspires-comment-apocalypse-1592575661/
