For the US biologist Michael Levin, who leads the Levin Lab at Tufts University, when we think of intelligence only in terms of what brains in bodies can do, we’re projecting our own biases onto the world. Instead, he argues, intelligence is the capacity to pursue goals, and it exists on a continuum that ranges from cells to humans. In this short documentary from Quanta Magazine, Levin explains how his lab tests how lifeforms at different scales of complexity adapt to novel challenges in their pursuit of goals – including an experiment in which genetically engineered tadpoles adapted to having eyes on their tails.
