Fedi folks I need guidance on where to direct someone who is seeking therapy in Ottawa, ON, for a divorce that seems to have been triggered by the one admitting to exploring gender non-conformity and the wife not handling it well. They are both Muslim and are fairly new immigrants. I don’t have direct contact with this person so I’d be passing on some suggestions. It seems like they have the means to pay for private practice if needed. It would be for individual counselling (not for the wife)....

I almost never go to Tim Hortons anyway but I hope you all stop going as well. Fuck Harry Potter and the author who continues to obsessively vilify trans folks. “Tim Hortons and the no good very bad ‘Harry Potter’ collaboration” https://xtramagazine.com/culture/tim-hortons-harry-potter-collaboration-283630 #JKRowling #Transphobia

Former #NWSL Portland Thorns coach (who also coached Canada’s youth national teams and had a career playing in Winnipeg) and former NWSL and Canada national team player Desi Scott (aka “The Destroyer”) are co-founders of Winnipeg’s new (not yet named) Northern Super League franchise. Desi Scott will be Vice President, Community & Player Experience and Rob Gale will be Chief Sporting Officer of the new club that will play its first season in the #NSL next year (2027). https://www.nsl.ca/new...

When people wonder if Pride celebrations are still important, this is what I think about: Most of us just want to exist and not worry about our safety. Many people in power work hard to stop that basic human need to feel safe. That’s not some distant history. That’s today. “I think my favourite part of Nova Scotia so far is the fact that we can go out and I can hold your hand, and I can like put my arm around you and like touch you and be just normal with you, and I don’t feel scared and you do...

This is another good depiction of how closely intertwined Canada and the US are. Not only are pipelines in Canada profitable for US companies but those wildfires are already affecting the air in US cities several miles/kilometres from the border. Nature does not have borders. Fire and smoke do not stop at imaginary human delineations. We already have to borrow firefighters from other countries to keep up. Canada has a lot of water compared to other countries but that’s dwindling. Pipelines al...

Something I didn’t know about Canada: only 1/4 of Canadians get their mail delivered directly to their door. So if you live in a house and have your mail delivered to a mailbox next to your front entrance you are in the minority. In the next 5 years 4 million addresses will switch to shared mailboxes (like we apartment building residents have in the entrance lobby or like in rural areas where there’s a cluster of mailboxes when you enter town). https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canada-post-doo...

I love reading the comments under posts like these. Even if some personal stories are heartbreaking, the support that comes from others who are also reading the comments is rather heartwarming. @hollie@social.coop the way you interact with people is really lovely. You give space for people to have their emotions and share their stories. My time in the Fediverse has allowed me to think more deeply about gender and not just on a personal level but on a societal level. Even though I still consid...

I love the lean-back Ava does when she wants attention. She makes a point of facing away from me and tilts her head back to look directly into my eyes. We look lovingly into each other’s upside-down eyes 🥰 She also makes good use of the reading pillow I got a few months ago by leaning her head against the arm part. She does this every day. #cats #Caturday

"The movie [“Ripe!”] will be based on a short film Kelley O’Hara made about an American exchange student who goes to Spain and falls for a soccer rival. It won Best Narrative Short at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival, so I have high hopes for this one. Between Kelley O’Hara giving us this gay soccer movie and her fellow World Cup champion Megan Rapinoe adapting the gay soccer novel Cleat Cute into a gay soccer show called Playing the Field, the gays of the USWNT are really showing up for...

#LesbianVisibilityWeek happens to coincide with the week I first came out to my mom nearly 30 years ago. I usually use the terms gay or queer nowadays but I’m still really proud of being a lesbian. I’m not just attracted to women, I love watching women do sports or being Thespians or simply talking about their passions. I love learning about women’s lives, their loves, and their heartbreaks. I’ve learned to be more aware of gender and sexuality fluidity and I embrace the varieties. I hate wha...

It is possible to insult fascists without being ableist or fatphobic. A physical feature does not equal values, behaviour, or intent. All you’re doing when you make fun of fascists’ bodies in your meme is tell your peers that you hate anyone who might share some of those physical qualities. Those fascists don’t even see your meme and will likely never see your meme. Your audience is your fellow social media users. If your insult could apply to non-fascists then it’s not an effective insult...

“A self-described "card-carrying transsexual," Alison Laing was a beloved activist and organizer in trans circles throughout her life. […] These intimate pictures, assumed to be taken by her wife Dottie, chronicle Laing’s gender expression in public settings across the U.S. from 1956 to the early 2000s. The photos consist of Laing soaking up the sun at the beach, lounging in the lush greenery of Vermont and posing in analogue photobooths—all while donning traditional 1950s hous...

That PixelFed Dansup guy has been called out by BIPOC women for a couple of years and I see he’s up to his usual BS again. He will claim minority status to excuse his behaviour. He has been one big red flag since the beginning and if you make excuses for him just block me.
