@Jeremy @paige @evan @cwebber I'm not sure if we are talking about the same bill, but c-22 that designates "electronic service providers"; fediverse admins fall into that, even someone who hosts nextcloud for their family falls into that -- the government can order you to betray your users/family/friends - and legally bar you from talking about it. If passed as written, it's pretty damning for the 'digital sovereignty' movement. I think a lot...

@Jeremy As for age verification, I agree with @chris that even if we wanted to do it, we just do not have the resources. If we were ordered to "Do it or shut down" then our only choice would be to shut down, which gives more power to big-tech and enables their abuses even further, with more data on their users! Another bill we should just kill, in my opinion.

@Jeremy @res260 @paige @evan @cwebber All good, I don't blame you, bills in this country are so vaguely named and hard to follow. Both bills deserve scrutiny though so I appreciate you bringing it up.

@Jeremy Hmm, my first thought is that moderation is community-based on a per-instance basis, so they can have a much easier time moderating out bad actors (entire bad instances) - and regional instances like yours for NWT can ensure they're more likely to reach their actual constituents rather than faraway trolls you can mention rule 1 of https://joinmastodon.org/covenant that would wipe out many types of bad actors from any respected instance I'll read the article and try t...

https://northtube.ca/w/pHG7o3TVuMHMp1eCQcj2fW NorthTube's storage is now on Storm Buckets, fully Canadian-hosted -- here's a tutorial on the s3 storage platform I've been creating, using #Garage under the hood! I have two commits merged upstream, excitedly waiting for 2.4.0! I'm still building & dogfooding the platform, but if anyone wants alpha access let me know!

Finished recording this tutorial, got it on Northtube! #PeerTube is literally the reason I started working on my own s3 platform, so it's the first real app-specific tutorial - was built to solve my problem, so hopefully it can solve others! https://northtube.ca/w/uvzUit2ryMPpN7vfZ9S6Vn More to come. Storm Buckets is in alpha, but feel free to sign up for a free 100gb grant! Honestly looking for more Alpha users to provide feedback, so you'd be helping me out as well #s3 #Fed...

@renata @dmacphee Seriously. We saw in America (Jan 6) that the more lenient we are with these fascist liars , the more empowered they feel to break further, more serious laws (not saying this isn't serious, 3 million leaked addresses and phone numbers is extremely serious) He's calling Elections Alberta an "evil organization that suppresses democracy" - like he's being coached, or just copy/pasting the fascism But yeah if we let him get away with i...

okay guys you can calm down, the OPTIONS preflight CORS handling on local-aliased buckets in Garage is fixed Jokes aside, I am proud to announce my pr got merged into Garage! I'm always super nervous when making a PR for open source projects, a mix of imposter syndrome and catastrophizing -- so I'm really happy it was accepted so quickly :) especially since it was legitimately blocking me in production https://git.deuxfleurs.fr/Deuxfleurs/garage/pulls/1450

Haven't been too active, and have been letting things get out of touch -- I apologize -- got hit with the good ol' depression bug. The same stuff that I was super excited about ~ a month ago, I just haven't had any energy for, lately. Just been working, sleeping, and trying my best to take care of myself. Sorry guys, but I'll be back soon.

I've been following #garage for a few months, and finally I got around to opening up my own self-hosted garage cluster - for now it just holds my obsidian notes, but I have a ton of ideas for what I want to use this for! I'm super happy with how easy Garage is to set up and use. I'm excited to delve deeper into it, write more about it, and transition NorthTube and SocialOntario to it once I can ensure it's fully stable! Blog post: https://mathewstorm.ca/tech/se...

Try out my game: https://smattymatty.itch.io/archimedes-survivor A fast-paced survivor roguelite - start off simple, scales to absurd chaos! My friend and I have been making the 'Archimedes' game engine from scratch for some time - an 'off-and-on' type of project - and this is the official tech demo! If you like survivors-like games, you'll probably enjoy this. But be warned: It's quite tough! Can you get past 3 minutes? Most can't....

Mark Zuckerberg donated $1M to Trump's inauguration, killed fact-checking to please him, and just made Trump's former national security adviser Meta's president. Their own researchers called Instagram "a drug" and themselves "pushers." Canada's Bill C-11 protects these companies from Canadian competition. Doctorow is right - repeal it, legalize jailbreaking, and go into business disenshittifying their garbage. https://www.politico.com/news/2026/01/12/meta-ta...

Sick of google slides and every other bloated presentation tool so i built a lightweight one into EduLite Markdown in, slides out. The whole point is accessibility and heavy caching/export-ability for offline use Works on my local machine for my own use right now, I hope to get it easily self-hostable and deployed one day! #OpenSource #Django #Python

RE: https://socialontario.ca/@smattymatty/116042189042136595 The problem isn't "too much software." It's who owns the software, and what they optimized it for. Healthcare isn't worse because of software. It's worse because healthcare software was built to maximize billing extraction, not patient outcomes. Social media isn't worse because of software. But it was built to maximize engagement, not connection. More proprietary closed #so...

Sam Altman said Trump was Hitler in 2016. Then he gave $1M to Hitler's inauguration because OpenAI's $830B valuation depends on his deregulation. The US has charged ZERO #Epstein co-conspirators. FBI docs label multiple people as co-conspirators in child sex trafficking. The DOJ refuses to prosecute. Meanwhile Norway, UK, France, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland & Slovakia have all launched investigations or charges. #Canada has done nothing. But there is something we can do, and it requires public pressure. 1/3 ---
