Desolation Center is the story of a series of early 80s guerrilla music and art performances in Southern California that are recognized to have inspired Burning Man, Lollapalooza and Coachella. The documentary splices interviews and rare performance footage of #SonicYouth, #Minutemen, Meat Puppets, Swans, Redd Kross, Einstürzende Neubauten and more, documenting a time when pushing the boundaries of music, art, and performance felt almost like an unspoken obligation. https://www.desolationcenter...

We’re gonna go see #TheInvite at the movies tonight. Been loving Edward Norton since I was a kid and I’m a big #A24 fan. Hope it’s good. I’ll report back. #movies

This guy I volunteer with at the queer youth center grew up here and brought this one-page #zine for me to check out. He said someone handed it to him when he was hanging out downtown sometime in the #90s. After asking around, I learned it’s by a guy who they used to call Brett Not Bombs (he also headed up Food Not Bombs). Cool piece of #Florida #punk ephemera.

My friend @imp3tuz@mastodon.gamedev.place is a skateboarder in Zimbabwe. Being #trans in a religious conservative household and country, #skateboarding is an actual lifeline for her. I know some of you out there relate to being young and feeling lost in society and either the #punk scene, #skate scene or some other group of misfits literally saved your life. I mentor this 18 year old who’s into #punk and we talk about music a lot. I asked her what she thinks of older bands like The Strokes and White Stripes and she said, “That’s Dad Rock.” And I said, “Okay, well what do you call Led Zep and the Beatles?” And she said, “That’s Classic Rock.” Just wanted to report back from #GenZ so we’re all updated on the terms.

I finally feel like learning to do more than just push around so I’m gonna teach myself how to skate ramps. Tonight I practiced rolling up and rolling back down fakie. #beginner #SkateWitches

Absolutely transcendent experience watching Music for 18 Musicians by #SteveReich at Sarasota Opera House. I had to capture this moment when three musicians were playing the same marimba. #ExperimentalMusic #LiveMusic

#NowPlaying #vinyl #RockNRoll “Early Black Rock’n Roll No. 2 (1949-1959): I Smell a Rat” (Trikont, 2010) Back to this one. The recording quality of these songs plus whatever remastering magic makes this comp such a great listen. Big Mama Thornton, Guitar Slim, Lonnie the Cat, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Big Maybelle, Sandra Meade…. and more well-known artists like Howlin’ Wolf, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley and Etta James. The title track is incredible.

Second run of #ParadiseLost available now! It’s the story of the 80s & 90s #punk scene in a small city with few visible reminders of its subcultural past, told through interviews. 1980s #hardcore and #skateboarding culture is heavily featured in the #zine, including an interview with Dan Destructo of the band No Fraud. https://shotgunseamstress.blogspot.com/2026/02/paradise-lost-sarasota-florida-hardcore.html #zines

“Punkhouse Oakland, the Podcast is an outgrowth of the instagram Elizabeth Whitney started during the pandemic, sharing photos of the many people she'd lived with in 20 years in a punkhouse. She invited everyone to share their photos, one tag led to another, and before long there were 6,000 followers and a huge backlog of photos to share…” #punk #BayArea #1980s #1990s #podcast #ErinYanke https://www.erinyanke.com/projects/punkhouse-oakland-the-podcast

She's done! Looks way better in print, but I've got the digital flipbook version linked in my blog. If you read it, I'd love it if you left a comment afterward. "Paradise Lost: Sarasota, Florida Hardcore & Punk Scene 1980s-1990s" is an interview zine about memory and subculture in the face of urban renewal. 68 pages, color cover, b&w interior. https://shotgunseamstress.blogspot.com/ #zines #printedmatter #printmatters #independentpub...
