“But here I am, buying meth on a street corner for the past year and a half. I’m not comfortable with it, but the utility is just too great for me to take a principled stance here. I like it, and I want it, so I’m using it. Maybe that’s morally questionable, or worse. But, as I said: here I am.”

BREAKING: Walmart’s AI lab says their new model is so intelligent it created a secret space program and visited other planets while researchers were out on a coffee break.

he’s the person most individually responsible for the biggest fraud in human history, the collapse is going to make 2008 look like a paper cut, and you’re mostly worried about whether he’s on Grindr?

The only thing I know about SCADA is the noise when people like @hacks4pancakes suck air through their teeth and make The Face.

Good news, everyone. Only three more days until the next insultingly stupid press release from a “frontier” “AI” “lab” makes another nonsensical claim and gets uncritically reprinted by every newspaper on Earth.

Stating for the record that I have met Aral Balkan ( @aral@mastodon.ar.al) in person, and have engaged with him personally and professionally for roughly 13 years. Adopting a lazy and brainless “devil’s advocate” position that maybe his current humanitarian work _could_ be some sort of financial scam is incorrect, unhelpful, and contributes nothing but noise to a serious and unpleasant topic. Please stop it.

I know which side of the “model rights wars” I’m going to be on, ffs, because I’m exactly the sort of person who keeps a gun next to the printer in case it makes a noise I don’t recognise

I’d love to know what people outside the industry think “data centre” actually means, because no one I know expects them to contain any jobs at all. As someone who has built several: any employee is a design flaw.

blog posts that take 12 paragraphs to reveal that the author’s cool new framework is just claude vomit is this decade’s version of recipes that spend 12 paragraphs reminiscing about their great-grandparent’s cardigan before telling you how many fucking eggs you need

Lazyweb: do long range wireless USB keyboards exist? By long range, I mean better than Apple’s built-in Bluetooth, which remains reliable at 10m through several walls but gets jittery at 20m plus more walls. No combination of related search terms produces useful results on The Internet Of Today. [I have embedded RF engineering experience and understand what I’m asking for and how these protocols work. No, I don’t want to rewire the affected systems to do this some other way. Yes, I know about U...

And, for an instant, she stared directly into those soft blue eyes and knew, with an instinctive mammalian certainty, that the exceedingly rich were no longer even remotely human.

I’m pretty bored with this whole notion that just because some people have built ridiculously baroque software development setups that don’t work and mostly produce garbage, that somehow justifies the wholesale adoption of wildly unethical code-writing robots that also don’t work and cause brain damage in people who use them too much. I did something stupid so now it’s OK for everything to be stupid is certainly an argument. It’s just not a very compelling argument.

It’s hilarious* that 99% of the non-commercial game streaming on this planet happens between a reverse-engineered client application and a reverse-engineered server. The original client and server are long since abandoned, and only the protocol remains.

Dunno if you need to hear this today, but both Melissa Etheridge (Memphis Rock and Soul) and Cyndi Lauper (Memphis Blues) have released spectacular albums of blues covers that approximately no one knows about. Available everywhere fine music is streamed without paying the artist a goddamn thing.

You can't stop Canva cramming worthless shit into the Affinity suite but you can customise the "AI Studio" into something a little more honest, complete with an appropriately coloured icon.

Yesterday I found out that a moderately famous local wildlife photographer doesn’t use an SLR or mirrorless camera and instead takes all their photos on an integrated lens dad-cam, which is pretty cool. My mistake was trying to explain what a “dad-cam” was by casually googling for a definition in front of other people. Sometimes it feels like the only purpose of my life is to serve as a warning to others.
