I’d love to know what people outside the industry think “data centre” actually means, because no one I know expects them to contain any jobs at all. As someone who has built several: any employee is a design flaw.

@rmi@cloudisland.nz I think for a lot of people seeing Conspicuous New Things™ in the built environment are a comforting signifier of "progress" and "things going well". Nothing substantial, purely superficial.

@rmi@cloudisland.nz I always imagined that datacentres just contained masses of computers and memory modules that did their own thing. The whole idea of AI is to eliminate jobs!
