Today has made me realize how totally lacking live captioning is on most of Twitch, and how badly I need to integrate it into my own setup.

In a way, because I've both (a) built a pretty good library overall and (b) specifically splashed out on two or three larger titles in June right before I got laid off, I am uniquely equipped in that regard. Like especially concerning my retro backlog, I could concievably game deeply into my 40s before I'd run out of things to do. Though I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a liiiiiiiitttttttle FOMO over Owlcat's Expanse title.

Absolutely thrilled to share this week's blog post with y'all. Today it's about more than a victorious fist-pump about having "finished" a stage of a project. Today, I'm pleased to announce more or less the entire future roadmap for getting The Rise into print. https://www.arcanalabs.ca/news/labnotes/arcrev/writing/2026/08/05/the-rise-nears-release.html #blog #author #ArcaneRevolutionTrilogy #amediting

I'm designing a landing page on something working off a template and my brain is already supersaturated trying to come up with copy.

After a full day in the stories and funtime factory, I have decided to put in a solid evening in a factory of another kind. Join me while I'm building the largest factory I've ever built, which will also, funnily enough, produce almost nothing. It's all very Satisfactory. https://twitch.tv/patcharcana #smallstreamer #pngtuber #satisfactorygame #twitch

I'm not even sure that I want to use Anubis to solve this problem. Proof of work is not really my favourite computational solution for... any problem, honestly. I get the logic of it, I get why it punishes clients in a scalar way, but still. I also had some pride in the idea that my most important sites were effectively JS-free and now I'm talking about making a change that would make JS mandatory to access anything in my hive. But I can't keep getting hit by these guys

Gods damn it my servers are getting hammered again. Get your agentic bullshit off my fucking wiki. And while we're at it, stop lying in your user agent. You're not clever, you're just a pain in my arse.

It turns out they could, in fact, take the sky from me.

Total time to recover one of my wikis from backup? About five minutes. Two of which were just me trying to remember what the hell the command to read a SQL source file was. (SOURCE, for the curious)

One of the other advantages of the New Meta for my life is that I have time to make breakfast now in the morning. Of course you have to balance that against what is economical but I know one strange trick that makes people my age and younger furious. (It's almost always cheaper done at home, as long as you know what you're doing and mindful about how you're doing it.)

Well, my shiny new job around which I was building a hopefully-stable career has evaporated. I was the unnecessary 2nd senior engineer on a project that couldn't afford a second engineer, and it was the 89th day of my employment. If anyone needs a quality- and documentation-minded, Canadian Senior SRE, reach out to me. I am quite good at this. #FediHire #GetFediHired

Last boost: Yeah, that's me, in case you were wondering why I only do Scribes And Makers these days and not writerscoffeeclub

#ScribesAndMakers #TTMD @ElyseMGrasso My understanding is that the Elderkin Chronicles has a magic system baked into it. Would you call the style of magic more hard magic or soft magic? Do you have a preference one way or the other?

Today I'm getting bloodwork done. I was meant to go do that in May. My doctor probably fuckin' hates me.

Sometimes, the CreativeCommons licenses are problematic. Currently sat here trying to figure out if using a CSV I found as the basis for a component in a game I'm working on means I cannot charge for the game because the CSV is CC-BY-SA licensed.

#ScribesAndMakers 7/3. We have some new people in the community. Re/Introduce yourself and tell us about your creative work. I'm a multidisciplinary maker (papercraft and coding mostly, but some electronics, woodworking, and "general handystuff") and a writer (as @zadammac) specializing in fantasy and sci-fi. Lately I'm trying hard to "de-hustle" these pursuits so that I can go back to just enjoying them, because I started a new day job that is much more demanding o...

Last boost: at a point in the past I contemplated writing myself a tool called NeoAlexandria that had some libsci features but which was mostly just going to be a wrapper for managing large corpuses of torrented data. The idea being that I and others could distribute the software and the library metadata and just keep a big sync'd pool of mutual backing-up.

Ah, yes, running official/semiofficial government comms through social media: a bad idea with many many layers, like a millefuelle of failure to cogitate.

A page I am adding to my website requires what is effectively recycled Jekyll logic but a de-novo HTML element to get it to look right, and I'm wondering if I shouldn't just knuckle under and do the full site redesign while I'm in here.

#ScribesAndMakers 6/8. What's something you consider creative that other people might not? I mean, just name an activity, really. A real good example is a lot of hobbies people see as consumptive - gaming, watching (TV/Movies/Streams), reading. It can be purely consumptive if you do it unimaginatively, I guess. But you can get damned creative if you try to on purpose.

I have some friends who are into chemistry in a big way who have just updated me on the latest in Bad Ideas In Nitrogen Bonds. I do appreciate someone is out there trying to give me Epstein Drive performance outta a chemical rocket.

I have this thing I do where I oscilate from a sort of medievalist hyperfocus to a sort of science fiction hyperfocus. When I'm in my medievalist moods I take better care of myself but get much less done. When I'm hyperfocusing on space-trucker-mode I have a tendency to not take care of myself at all but I get a LOT of work done.

#ScribesAndMakers 6 Ghoti (fish) is a word created to demonstrate the odd pronunciation variations in the English language. Create a word of your own or share one you've created. Wisteria is full of very fancy sounding, but stupid, invented terms. The Gnostic Asceity is a favourite. In published media though, I came up with the term "teleproprioception" to describe a facet of Vidcund's unusual abilities, though it's not really a complete label for what he's doing. The...
