For decades, we've been going on vacation on the Baltic Sea, and for decades we’ve been renting bikes there. But the prices have gone up and the quality has gone downhill. So we finally bought our own bikes today and immediately went for a short ride to the Border Museum in Schlutup. Also, we can now recommend “at Fahrräder” in Lübeck: https://at-fahrraeder.de #Lübeck #BikeTooter

After yesterday’s thunderstorm it was much cooler today, good conditions for riding our new bikes to #Travemünde. Didn’t know you had to take a bus shuttle through the Herrentunnel, but it’s free and works well. #Lübeck

It’s great that conferences today are concerned with accessibility and inclusivity, but something that's still commonly overlooked is air quality. Such levels of CO₂ are unhealthy.

I understand that potential security or ethical issues of a computer system may not be obvious when the intended application is generally unproblematic. However, when you specifically list medical, legal, and defense as application domains of your system, storing data locally rather than in the cloud is certainly a good idea, but you should think a bit harder about it. In particular when it involves AI. #ReviewerDuty

In LaTeX, you typically use an array environment for this type of equations, and \hline for the horizontal rule. I just discovered that #Pandoc doesn’t translate the \hline for #Typst output—but I also couldn’t find how you’d even do this in Typst. Any suggestions?

Halfway through this paper that I’m reviewing appears an AI-generated diagram of the system the paper describes. The authors are transparent about it, but what do I make of this? I’ve got to admit, this annoys me more than I expected. Even if we assume that the diagram is structurally correct, the text contains the typical genAI artifacts (mashed-up letters, misspellings, etc.) that one wouldn’t accept in the main text—so it’s simply sloppy. What’s the point!?

“In this work, we conduct a large-scale simulation of how users might delegate work to LLMs across 52 professional domains. We find that current LLMs are unreliable delegates: even frontier models corrupt an average of 25% of document content over long workflows, with sparse but severe errors that silently compound over time.” Good to see the issue addressed explicitly, even though the results aren’t surprising—why would anyone expect LLMs to be reliable!? https://arxiv.org/abs/2604.15597

This is of historical interest on so many levels. When the notion of AI first appeared, chess was considered the epitome of intelligence (before that it was calculating)—which, of course, it isn’t. Now AI is all about pattern recognition, which certainly covers more of what we associate with human intelligence, but go figure, it’s not *just* pattern recognition either. ⇢ https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/artificial-intelligence/chatgpt-got-absolutely-wrecked-by-atari-2600-in-beginner...
