  ‘Software tools are getting shallow and useless’ — I’m paraphrasing a YouTube video I briefly noticed while scrolling my recommendations. I agree. The most popular approach used to be: 1. There’s a distinct lack of applications to do X. (Or: I miss a good app to do X, which I need) 2. I will do my best to develop a tool that does X. I will do my research, sweat the details. 3. The tool is good. Others notice it, happily buy it, spread the word. 4. Profit as consequence of quality. (1/2)

  Let’s say, for the sake of argument, that the European Commission is just targeting American tech companies in the same childish and petty way Trump targets anyone or anything. Isn’t it long overdue that these companies actually *pay* for something, instead of just getting away with anything and using people and resources to just get rich at everyone else’s expense? If it were for me, they should pay even more. These fines are breadcrumbs for them.

  Do you want to know what’s one of the Mac apps I miss the most? Mailsmith. If there’s one email client that managed to make me migrate from Apple’s Mail (the email client I’ve used since Day 1), it’s Mailsmith. I had to go back to Mail once it was clear Mailsmith’s development had stopped. I understand that Bare Bones didn’t have enough resources to properly continue to make BBEdit *and* Mailsmith, but it’s a damn shame this email client was left behind.

  I think I’ve been in a creative limbo since 2019. I mean, it’s not that I haven’t done anything in the past 7 years. Ideas have been jotted down. My fiction has progressed, even if at a glacial pace (well, at an icebreaker pace, to be precise). My mind has been creatively stimulated. But somehow it has all felt like bubbles in a champagne glass. The daily routine does not help at all. I think I need to start some kind of noos-diet, some kind of new mental regime.

  So many companies ignore early adopters or loyal customers, instead concentrating their energies on getting new customers, making special deals and promos only for them. I find particularly ludicrous that Spotify is sending me emails telling me that I can gift 3 months of Spotify Premium to a friend so that they can enjoy the experience (and eventually maybe subscribe). Who benefits from this? Spotify and the people I send the gift to. Me, premium subscriber SINCE 2010? Certainly not. 1/

  A search for an old email in my archives surfaced an email exchange I thought I had forgotten for good. I still wince at how someone supposedly intelligent and insightful could utterly, completely misread something I wrote and me as a person. Anyway, this did not affect my mood, and that’s a good thing.
