  I continue to think that Linus's law ("with enough eyeballs all bugs are shallow") does not mean bugs get found, but that causes for bugs get found. "The Linux kernel misbehaves if this happens" ⇒ lots of people look for why. As far as I can see, this continues to be true. NOT: "Lots of people interested the Linux kernel, therefore all bugs are found quickly". That makes no sense at all to me. #subtoot

  Open source development, like all software development, is inherently a political act. Our societies rely on software so much now, that any software incorporates a view of how we should run our lives. Thus, it's as much political as writing a pamphlet.   If you ask for help from an open source project, and they ask you a specific question, please answer that exactly as asked. Avoid indirection: "latest version in repository" does not tell us what version you have, and it leaves the question of what repository you use. Copy-pasting the output of "foo --version" or similar command is the desired answer. You can add additional details if you want, but do NOT skip the exact answer requested.   I need to debug a thing that runs in CI. Part of the run is a tool that takes five minutes to run and this makes iterations slow. I could rewrite that to run in less than ten seconds, but doing that would take a week or two of full time work. What do I do?

  I've gotten the to stage in my life where I don't want to even read long discussions about intricate topics on IRC or most other chat systems any more. Chats are great for quick, short-form exchanges and keeping in touch with people. When a topic requires a long discussion, switch to a format that allows sedate, long-form expression.

  A year or two ago I saw a video of a Japanese family who make the best brushes for calligraphy. Painstakingly, by hand, a hair or a few hairs at a time. That's what I want to do when I grow up, but for code.

  I don't want Europe to grow its own hyperscalers. Companies that become too big are a problem no matter who owns them. Instead, lets bring a healthy and thriving ecosystem of small and medium sized organizations to do hosting and who co-operate. (Edit: I'm muting replies to this. I can't deal with the toxic fetishization of status quo today.)
