I've gotten the to stage in my life where I don't want to even read long discussions about intricate topics on IRC or most other chat systems any more. Chats are great for quick, short-form exchanges and keeping in touch with people. When a topic requires a long discussion, switch to a format that allows sedate, long-form expression.

I don't think the fediverse is suitable for long, intricate discussions either. With all the clients I've seen, the fedi is not suited for group discussions. The affordances cater only to specifically mentioned people. Everyone else needs to jump through hoops to follow the whole discussion.
