I don't think the fediverse is suitable for long, intricate discussions either. With all the clients I've seen, the fedi is not suited for group discussions. The affordances cater only to specifically mentioned people. Everyone else needs to jump through hoops to follow the whole discussion.

@liw@toot.liw.fi Dunno, honestly. Mastodon may have come through as "the next twitter" or whatever, but the underlying protocol is whatever we do with it. Remember Usenet News? I'm pretty sure something like it can reappear on ActivityPub. I definitely remember it as "long-form"...
