In the US there has been there has been a lot of press on the fact that the Pentagon reduced the number of American military deaths in the Iran war from 18 to 14 since the 4 occurring after the "ceasefire" don't count as war dead. The fact 2 were non-white women and only 1 of the 4 was white, while 12 of the first 14 were white and only 3 were women, I'm sure had nothing to do with this. Pete Hegseth's not a racist, right? Or a misogynist. Just ask him. But that's not...

Who is this Al guy everyone talks about? And why does he need data centers?

In 1980 the United States led a boycott of the Olympic games in Moscow due to the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan. Sixty countries joined the boycott. The 2026 World Cup is mostly in the United States. [Yes, this post is about Venezuela.]

There seems to be a lot of misconceptions about how to set up Mastodon. 1. You do not have to sacrifice a duck. Any waterfowl will do. 2. The bit about dancing around naked in a forest glade? While dancing is fun, you may just walk. 3. When the demon appears, you needn’t chant in Latin. It is fluent in all languages. The rest of the guide is correct.

Today is the 62nd anniversary of the earthquake centered on Valdez, Alaska. It is the strongest earthquake ever recorded in North America, and the second strongest in the world. Erin Kissane has an interesting essay on the earthquake, and how it can inform the current breakdown of shared knowledge in society. https://www.wrecka.ge/landslide-a-ghost-story/

Newly arrived on the fediverse and wondering the difference between here and X? Ask what the plural is of octopus. On X this will result in a vicious argument whether it is octopuses or octopi. Here there will be polite discussion on when one should use octopuses and when octopodes, followed by a discursion about classical Greek plurals. 1/2

The onboard computer that guided the Apollo missions to the moon had 4 kilobytes of RAM. I'm guessing the computer on Artemis II has at least twice that.

My daughter knows all that computer and programming stuff, so I thought she could use a state of the art handheld computer.

Here I thought that the US attack on Iran was to distract from the Epstein files. Turns out it was to start Armageddon so Jesus will return to earth. https://jonathanlarsen.substack.com/p/us-troops-were-told-iran-war-is-for

Maybe someone should suggest to Trump that he should celebrate the 250th anniversary of the US the same way the 50th was celebrated by John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. Would get great ratings on all the networks and be wildly popular.

The United States has: 770,000 homeless people 15,000,000 vacant homes and 535 members of congress, who can't seem to find any solution to this problem.

Reading the news and see that Trump's attack on Iran has accomplished its primary goal. No mention of Jeffrey Epstein anywhere.

Nurul Amin Shah Alam was a Rohingya refugee from Burma. He had been granted refugee status by the US government. Blind and speaking no English, in February 2025 he accidentally wandered into a neighbor's yard. She called the police, who tasered him, beat him up, and arrested him. After being held in jail for over a year, he was finally released on bail after agreeing to plead guilty to trespassing and possessing a weapon (a curtain rod he used as a walking stick). 1/2
