I maintain that the Playdate is basically the perfect client device for the #GeminiProtocol.

It's a bank holiday here in the UK, so you know what that means! Absolutely nothing, 'cos I'm freelance! First up on #Hackster today: there are "counterfeit" #RaspberryPi 5 boards in the market, likely bought as 1GB models and upgraded to 4GB/8GB/16GB using out-of-spec and/or low-quality parts. Raspberry Pi says buy from official resellers only, and you'll be fine. https://www.hackster.io/news/buyers-beware-counterfeit-raspberry-pis-with-fail...

Absolutely snowed under with work and non-work stuff at the mo', so I've been lax in doing my daily round-ups. I aintn't dead, though - everything's still going up on Hackster and Gemini! Normal service will resume when it resumes. Probably.

Had my first reason to try out DJI's warranty support this week, after a drone turned up deaf to GPS. Reported the problem on Sunday afternoon, got a DPD return label a few hours later, dropped it off at the Co-op Sunday night, a replacement was shipped out yesterday, and it was in my hands after lunch today. Not bad, DJI, not bad!

It's #Hackster round-up time, nice and early today - but only because I'm procrastinating over other things I have to do today... Anyway, first up is the news that the #AsteroidOS project, which builds alternative operating systems for smartwatches, has hit the 2.0 release milestone - with better performance, new apps, and more watches supported. https://www.hackster.io/news/asteroidos-2-0-brings-an-open-linux-based-replacement-os-to-more-smartwatches-than-ever-c0a9cc6d7d1b #T...

And, finally, the inimitable @combs has a new bit of electronic art out: a birch branch which tells a story of unchecked climate change... on a four-digit seven-segment LCD. In six minutes. https://www.hackster.io/news/chris-combs-latest-artwork-tells-a-six-minute-climate-change-story-on-a-four-digit-lcd-display-a4dd65db40ff #Technology #News #Hackster #Art #Makers

It's #Hackster round-up time - and no, you didn't miss Friday's, I had a rare day off. First up this week: the YARH.IO M4, a #RaspberryPi-powered 3D-printable handheld with a slick desktop stand. If it seems familiar, it was actually unveiled two years ago - and now the design files are finally available for you to make your own. https://www.hackster.io/news/the-yarh-io-m4-is-a-raspberry-pi-powered-handheld-you-can-finally-build-yourself-a25ef184e955 #Technology #News...

In non-work-related news, I treated myself to a drone for my birthday - and the youngest has also taken the CAA's test to be assigned a Flyer ID, Open Class A1 & A3. She took this shot of the local viaduct over the weekend - from takeoff to landing! (If the CAA is, by any chance, reading this, I maintained VLOS on the drone while she was looking at the screen to take the photo!)

There's illness abroad at the Halfacree household at the mo', but despite feeling rotten I've still got five shiny new #Hackster article for you. First, a low-cost addressable RGB LED backdrop for streaming - controllable via Twitch chat. https://www.hackster.io/news/set-chat-aglow-with-mike-pfeiffer-s-twitch-controlled-wled-lighting-backdrop-60161af82791 #Technology #News #Makers

@andypiper@macaw.social It can't be, because my vintage TV is in the office: a Panasonic Quintrix that I've owned since some time in the '90s. That also has two SCART sockets and an analog tuner. No digital tuner, tho'. Still works perfectly. Even has built-in surround sound thanks to the magic of Dolby Pro-Logic!

It's #Hackster round-up time on this cheery Monday, and we start with a new update to the #Arduino Cloud - bringing nice quality-of-life improvements, like undelete, but more importantly an actual proper dark-mode theme. https://www.hackster.io/news/arduino-cloud-gets-a-dark-mode-temporary-trash-can-for-easy-undeletion-and-more-in-new-update-6c9e1b12d10d #Technology #News

It's #Hackster round-up time, and there won't be one tomorrow as I'm having a rare day off to celebrate my birthday! First, though: if you've got an #Arduino UNO Q single-board computer, you'll want to upgrade to the new App Lab - you'll get a speech recognition library, easier one-click retraining of Edge Impulse machine learning models, and a "mission control" settings page if you do. https://www.hackster.io/news/arduino-uno-q...

It's #Hackster round-up time once again, and today I'm starting with perhaps the least likely hackintosh: Mac OS X running natively on the Nintendo Wii. https://www.hackster.io/news/bryan-keller-brings-apple-s-mac-os-x-to-a-whole-new-platform-the-nintendo-wii-c8481de9dd6e #Technology #News

Last #Hackster round-up of the week, a little later than usual 'cos the last article took a while to pass through the publishing digestive tract. First up, a lovely TRS-80 Model 100-style "writerdeck" built with journaling in mind: the Bee Write Back. (The software running on it is, sadly, AI slop, but the hardware design is all human.) https://www.hackster.io/news/simon-shimel-s-bee-write-back-is-a-compact-writerdeck-for-late-night-journaling-94ecf973dbb2 #Technolo...

An even later #Hackster round-up than usual, thanks to a day absolutely jam-packed with distractions... Only two today, starting with the BentoIO CMX2 - an ultra-slim carrier board for the #RaspberryPi Compute Module 5. https://www.hackster.io/news/this-raspberry-pi-compute-module-5-carrier-board-cuts-the-height-to-squeeze-into-slim-projects-b66e447292c8 #Technology #News

Okay, reasonably-timed #Hackster round-up today - miracle of miracles! Some #science to start, as researchers come up with a way to watch the electrons flow through electronic components in-situ — straight through the package. https://www.hackster.io/news/researchers-uncover-the-inner-workings-of-chips-with-non-contact-terahertz-imaging-c0a282703ab4 #Technology #News #Electronics

I was going to write about what seemed to be a neat project to interface old MicroDrive-style hard drives (the non-IDE ones) with modern systems. Then I hit the section about how all the code was "written" by OpenClaw. *Then* I found this screenshot, which, just... well. Yes. Then I sighed deeply and closed the tab. #AISlop

I bought a chunky USB power bank and 60W solar panel t'other day: the Anker Solix C200 DC. It's pretty good. But... I turned it over, and there's a bunch of Important Warnings on the bottom. Including this one: "DANGER: This device is intended to be used indoors only. Do not use outdoors." Anker appears to have forgotten to include this in its promotional materials, so I've taken the liberty of... improving the imagery on the product page.

Right, about to lock my focus on a newsletter I need to get written by the end of the day - so let's procrastinate just a little longer with today's #Hackster round-up. First up: a fantastic, but pricey, physical Conway's Game of Life board - built using a cheap microcontroller connected to a large number of expensive self-illuminating tactile switches. https://www.hackster.io/news/michal-lcamtuf-zalewski-s-conway-s-game-of-life-board-packs-hundreds-of-dollars-in-switch...

Another late #Hackster round-up today, and I'm still waiting for two pieces to go live - but let's see what's already up for now. First, it's a very special day today: the Sinclair #ZX81's 45th birthday. I've written a little potted history here, digging into the reference books in the office library - and decorated with pics of my very own ZX81, which I hand-soldered from the cheapskate kit edition. https://www.hackster.io/news/microcomputing-on...
