  @transience If you cut them up, toss them with oil and salt, and roast them for a very very long time, until they are crispy and dark on the edges, and then toss them in citrus, they will not taste like dirt.

  I had a few pleasantries (sneeze/bless you) with the man across from me on the subway, and now that we are above ground, he is on the phone and clearly managing a pretty complicated stable of high-end phone sex workers with extremely demanding clientele for whom not just anything will get them where they want to go. It is always a treat to encounter people who are gifted at what they do!

  I bought a new bra and in order to get a discount I signed up for the mailing list, which of course means that every day since I received the bra, I've gotten these increasingly invasive emails asking how it felt today. Did you notice it feels different this time? Should be just about molded to your shape now. Hot day today, good day for that bra, huh? You gotta wear it three times before you decide, OK? Mildly creepily entertaining but today, unsubscribe.

  Kane Parsons, the 20yo director of Backrooms, mentioned Punishment Park (1971) as an inspiration in an interview, which I had not seen, though I love Peter Watkins's 1964 Culloden.   Last night I dreamed I went to a philosophy conference that was the opposite of ours at Emory this month. It was mean, elitist, exclusive, silencing, shabby, defensive, and sad. There was no food or drink on the premises. People ignored the talks to schmooze or tuned in only to mock them. It was such a dead-on representation of everything I fear when facilitating scholarly meetings, or attending them. The environment you create will feed some impulse in people, good or bad.

  Every time I do something really big and complicated, I spent a few days in a frenzy of activity and energy and then I crash for days. The week I came home from running my conference, I finished edits on two articles, wrote a job ad, a CFP, booked a bunch of speakers, finished grading all my classes, wrote a million overdue emails... and then spent almost a week feeling like I was recovering from a nearly mortal wound. Reminder to self: You are not dying! This always happens!

  @deathkitten I know--there are many many reasons. My students, like most college students, are being pressured to use it, not be "afraid" of it, and I keep finding that aesthetic disgust is the only thing that seems to break through sometimes.

  Today one of my students asked me why I hate AI writing/art so much, and I said, "Imagine if someone told you they were going to give you the best food in the world, and they went around to all the best restaurants in the world, and then put it in a blender and handed you a straw.   As a former "gifted" elementary school student, I'm 100% in favor of Mamdani's proposal to end the gifted programs in early public education. When you're separating 6 and 7yo's and saying "These kids are special and high-achieving," you are selecting almost entirely for kids with learning support at home, and allocating extra resources to them, while draining resources from the kids with less support. https://www.nytimes.com/20...

  I am too respectful to photograph the two NB goth youths sitting across from me on this 1 train, both bent deeply over and furiously reading--one tearing through Foucault's Discipline and Punish, and the other plowing through an ancient paperback of Mishima. The aura on this train is electric.
