RE: https://sunny.garden/@bragefuglseth/116920572163082606 Because of the recent paragraphs that have surfaced from the kernel mailing list, I feel inclined to bring this 2 days old post up again. People need to stop viewing Linus as some kind of figurehead for the Linux desktop / free software. Not because of his recent statements in particular, he's entitled to his own opinions, but because he generally just has never represented the values or mindset everyone seems to think he has. He...

Linus Torvalds is an important figure for kernel development and the general existence of Linux, but he should not be treated as an authority on everything Linux- or software-adjacent because of that. For example, it has very little to say what desktop environment he prefers, or if he uses LLMs to develop his personal projects. The world could do with less idolization.

Every time people claim that server-side window decorations provide a cleaner, more uniform look, I think of what Kdenlive could have looked like on my desktop vs how it actually looks #CSD #SSD #KDE #QT #GNOME #Wayland

We need a name for the phenomenon where a technically inclined vocal minority tries to push a general-audience piece of software in a more and more technical direction, not realizing that it would come at the expense of practically everyone else. #freesoftware

Calling all translators: #Keypunch and #Fretboard are getting new releases in 2 weeks! This is a great time to go through their translations in your language and making sure everything is ready and up-to-date. https://discourse.gnome.org/t/upcoming-keypunch-and-fretboard-releases-on-2026-07-17/36017?u=bragefuglseth

This might just be my subjective experience, but it feels like GNOME app ecosystem is entering a new stage where the current modern tooling has been available for long enough, and a sufficient enough third-party developer culture has been established, that we are getting a wave of bigger and more ambitious apps than before. As if the developers who published their first small libadwaita indie apps 3-4 years ago are now using that experience to build and support a new, more advanced class of pro...

Why is Bazaar so much more performant than GNOME Software? Is PackageKit really that much of a strain performance-wise compared to just using the Flathub API? Or are there other reasons? #Bazaar

@tbernard Where are you getting the paintings used in the @modal branding from? Just wanted to say that I think they work really well as visuals for the articles/slideshows you’re doing 👊

I know I'm super late to the party here, but I just discovered #Flathub's new Year in Review page. Happy to learn that #Keypunch apparently won: - "Newcomer of the Year" in the education category in 2024 - "Biggest Growth" and "Most Improved" in the education category in 2025 To be honest this feels like I've missed out on my own Oscar's ceremony. https://flathub.org/en/year-in-review/2025

Just handed off my coordinator role for the Norwegian GNOME translation team. During my time as a coordinator, the Norwegian translations have undergone a significant overhaul in the core apps, and a lot of Circle apps have also been translated into Norwegian for the first time. I'm proud of that, and plan to continue contributing translations now and then, while Kjartan, who has coordinated the Norwegian translation team for the majority of its lifetime, takes on the role as a coordina...

Happy #pride month! Since this is also the high season of the "no politics in software" crowd, please consult this article by @Samsai and share it liberally with anyone who needs to read it. https://samsai.eu/post/politics-in-your-foss-project/

If you've used #Spotify on #GNOME lately, you've likely become familiar with its jarring blue title bar. This will likely go away soon thanks to Athul Iddya, who has worked on improving Chromium's Wayland integration for non-browser windows: https://chromium-review.googlesource.com/c/chromium/src/+/7709824 #Wayland #Chromium

Have any of you experienced issues with typing accents in your #GNOME apps recently? Some people are having issues with #Keypunch and numerous other apps using the GNOME 49/50 runtimes, but I can't pinpoint the exact reason. https://github.com/bragefuglseth/keypunch/issues/168

It's been a while. I'm happy to report that both #Keypunch and #Fretboard have been updated to the #gnome 50 runtime as of today. Huge thanks to Sabri Ünal, @hub and everyone else on the Flathub team for the work they're doing helping our app ecosystem stay up to date ❤️
