The Africa map debacle is a glimpse of a future with "AI". Not knowing. Not caring. The most unbelievably wrong map I have ever seen at an international, official event. A huge insult and embarassment. "AIDS? We don't even know where your countries are." https://emilysbass.substack.com/p/the-us-state-department-redraws-the

In Ontario, an ”AI tool” being used to predict prisoners’ behavior. Its primary feature is disproportionately placing Black prisoners in maximum security. The whole point of ”AI” is often to maintain or even strengthen prejudice, while displacing blame onto something ”other” – that the public is made to think is computationally neutral. Prejudice is cemented by humans through the complete process of interplay with the software, from ideation to creation to usage: selection, development, impleme...

Just as accurately as any generative ’AI’ detector, Instagram now automatically adds ”Likely made with AI” to images. The inherent false positives means legitimate artists are now ousted as not doing their own work. Using Meta products is truly a deal with the devil, as is using ’AI’ detector software. Layer upon layer of deceit weighing down on real talent. @davidrevoy@framapiaf.org https://framapiaf.org/@davidrevoy/116941001377913004

I saw Linus Torvalds expressing concern over how ”AI-powered” bug hunters have made the Linux security mailing list unmanageable. So I sketched out a quick visualisation of this 😁 https://www.theregister.com/security/2026/05/18/linus-torvalds-says-ai-powered-bug-hunters-have-made-linux-security-mailing-list-almost-entirely-unmanageable/5241633

”Microsoft on Thursday reported its carbon emissions swelled last year as the software giant built new data centers, marking a setback for its climate goals as booming AI demand is expected to drive a sharp increase in global emissions over the next decade.” ”300 million metric tons. That’s the amount of global carbon dioxide emissions from data center electricity use the International Energy Agency expects by 2035, nearly doubling from 180 million tons today.” https://www.forbes.com/sites/tyl...

– Ja? – Kan du simma? – Jaaa. – Var har du lärt dig det? – I vattnet.

The whole segment where Trump admits to talking to FIFA about the red card is wild. I do avoid watching clips with DJT but seeing this just yet again confirms how far into the fog he is. And yet he’s allowed to keep going and news outlets keep reporting as if he’s saying something coherent. The smiling, nodding heads behind him add to the creepiness. https://yt.axbom.com/?id=ZCtIirTgOOk

Dreaming of inventing a hardware device that people can buy, start up and will run a server that can host your web presence in the form of a personal fedi instance, a ATProto PDS, a Ghost blog, document management, maybe even email and more, on a custom domain. A pre-installed plug-and-play VPS.

Fresh LinkedIn hell. Apparently now people can invite you to follow(!!!) - so they're not asking to be a contact. When you click Accept, you follow them but they don't follow you. At first glance these don't look different from regular LinkedIn contact requests.

Something I find fascinating when pointing out the climate issues of generative AI is how some people rush to interject that data centers are already a problem given the data storage required for media and streaming, and people haven't been objecting to that. It seems they seriously are saying: - since people haven't been aware and objecting (enough to be heard) *before* now, they shouldn't object now that they are aware… - since there already is a huge climate issue with data cen...

If you are considering the Kagi search engine, there are aspects you should be aware of from an ethics perspective. https://khevans.com/2025/08/21/kagi-ethics.html ”A portion of your fee goes towards Yandex, indirectly funding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Vlad, the CEO, has stated that 2% of their total costs in 2024 goes towards Yandex. He has also stated that there is no intent of changing this.” ”At least other search engines like DuckDuckGo have halted their partnerships with Yandex. Kag...

25 years ago I published ‘Gross Misinformation on the Net’. "It makes you wonder what other stories people could make up and have you believe as a fact. Could medical web sites be fabricated? What happens when people’s lives are at stake? What if someone consults a bogus doctor over the Internet? What if a mother nurses her sick child according to the instructions of an out-of-date web page, or one published by a 14-year old as a joke?" If only I had known… 😅 https://axbom.c...

Just published 'The trauma of AI Humanizers' "The existence of writing services under the name of “AI Humanizer”, promising to artificially make the tone of your texts more authentic, underscores a ludicrous and brutal era of human suppression. I’ve been writing since I was six years old. My writing has changed profoundly between then and now, 46 years later. But also between last month and now." "Suggesting that I use AI to write is telling me to hi...

Ghost is now a digital public good. "Ghost meets these criteria as open source software with a strong commitment to open standards, data portability, and user privacy. It's also the only publishing platform to have achieved this standard. For the many newsrooms, independent publishers, non-profits, and civic organizations already using Ghost, this is a formal recognition of the values that likely drew you to Ghost in the first place." https://ghost.org/changelog/digi...

Vimeo’s stance on user content vis-à-vis generative AI: ”After extensive outreach and hearing your thoughts, we are taking a definitive stance contrary to many other community websites: Vimeo will not allow generative AI models to be trained using videos hosted on our platform without your explicit consent, even if you use our free offerings. In addition, we prohibit unauthorized content scraping (by model companies) and continue to implement security protocols designed to protect user-generate...

Here's what happens when machine learning needs vast amounts of data to build statistical models for responses. Historical, debunked data makes it into the models and is preferred by the model output. There is much more outdated, harmful information published than there is updated, correct information. Hence statistically more viable. "In some cases, they appeared to reinforce long-held false beliefs about biological differences between Black and white people that experts have...

Anybody have experience with label printers? The classic one of course is Dymo but I truly hate how they’ve gone all proprietary with their labels. The series 5 printers have rfid chips on the rolls(!) so zero chance of using 3rd party labels. I’m seeing there are thermal label printers as well, requiring no ink, which seems appealing, but also very nostalgic for me. Believe it or nor I had a thermal printer in the 1980s, for my Sinclair ZX81. So what I’m really asking I suppose is if there’s...

An experienced copywriter, having finished a longer text, decides to just for laughs check it in “AI” detector software. It comes back saying 61% is likely AI-generated. For his own text. But. Wait for it. The “AI” detector then offers a service… “Would you like to humanize your text?” … The implication of this hurts my brain. The only thing that realistically should happen if a generative system edits your text is that any estimation of it being “AI”-generated should increase. But the “A...
