Vimeo’s stance on user content vis-à-vis generative AI: ”After extensive outreach and hearing your thoughts, we are taking a definitive stance contrary to many other community websites: Vimeo will not allow generative AI models to be trained using videos hosted on our platform without your explicit consent, even if you use our free offerings. @axbom Well damn, ok. That and in my tests last month their video compression seems to work better. Maybe I need to be paying more attention to VImeo.

@axbom The opening line in the paragraph above the quote: “As we integrate AI tools into Vimeo” Is this explicit rejection of scraping or training a good thing? Absolutely: it’s part of a turning tide against rampant and flagrant nonconsensual use of art. At the same time, remember these companies do this for cold, calculated reasons; Vimeo may stand to gain more by positioning itself against AI-justified theft than by trying to squeeze money from scrapers, but it still uses AI.
