As someone who read "The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect" on Kuro5hin when it came out, I feel like I would probably not name my AI startup this: https://www.primeintellect.ai/blog/prime-agent

If you, like me, have absolutely no idea what you're doing w.r.t. pruning shrubs and trees, this is a very helpful, no-nonsense guide: https://fieldreport.caes.uga.edu/publications/B949/basic-principles-of-pruning-woody-plants/

The existence of an oubliette implies the existence of a larger, more masculine, less constricting oubli.

A house centipede just ran out of my CPAP tank when I took it out of the drying rack, so if anyone needs me I'll be never breathing again

TNG S01E17, "When the Bough Breaks". Captain Picard devises a plot to rid the Enterprise of the children he despises, but is unfortunately stymied.

Man the fatigue is real this week. Basically all I've been up for today is a little weeding, repairing the porch, and cleaning the house. Everything is sore and I'm exhausted. 🫠

I have to say this new thing where users report each other as suspected LLMs is both understandable and, for a moderator wrangling a crowd of queer train enthusiasts online, deeply exhausting.

Given how impossibly grim and idiotic things are here in the US, it's nice to know there are still some countries upholding the high standards of democratic governance to which we all aspire.

@lcamtuf @SecureOwl A military friend of mine has a gruesome story about a colleague who ignored a fence and warning signs and inadvertently made contact with an active radio antenna. If I recall his language, their head "exploded". Arc hazards are a risk even with smaller AM or 5G antennas. I wish I had a good source for you here, but IIRC RF power density near some antennas is enough to fuck you up--basically like a big microwave. Be careful around antennas!

"A ship that can navigate space without a computer on board can be constructed in one-fifth the time and at one-tenth the expense of a computer-laden ship. We could build five times, ten times as great as Deneb could if we could but eliminate the computer." https://archive.org/details/1958-02_IF/page/4/mode/2up

Illinois HB5511 just passed both chambers and is headed to Governor Pritzker for signature. My reading is that by January 1st, 2028, any "public or semipublic web site" "used by a covered minor" "shall request... an age bracket signal" for any user that visits the web site. Our ToS bans anyone under 18, but there just... isn't any standard way for a web site to obtain age assurance information. I don't know what will happen if no standard emerges in the nex...

Bots now make up ~80% of woof.group traffic, and I'd say ~2/3rds of our signup requests. Pretty sure we'd be down right now if it weren't for @algernon's Iocaine.

You know @mozilla one AI browser feature I would actually use all the time is a button for any web page which says "Did you use AI to write this? This feels like slop" and if you click it it sends an email to the author of the web page asking whether they just made you read slop.

"To become wolf or to become hole is to deterritorialize oneself following distinct but entangled lines. A hole is no more negative than a wolf. Castration, lack, substitution: a tale told by an overconscious idiot who has no understanding of multiplicities as formations of the unconscious. A wolf is a hole..." Deleuze & Guattari, "A Thousand Plateaus"

Tried something new for pancakes this morning and it turned out *really* good... 500 g weak flour 100 g sugar 1 tbsp baking powder Pinch salt 2 eggs 250 g milk 250 g buttermilk Splash whiskey Butter for frying Optional: blueberries Bake as usual: whisk together dry ingredients, then add liquids and whisk until smooth. Pan to low-medium. Smear pan with butter, pour ~10cm disks, add blueberries (frozen works fine). Wait until bubbles form, check for golden underside, flip. Serves 3-4.

I keep having this bondage pipe dream about using a smart belay system like https://youtu.be/fhSUv2paiDQ?is=57SkVIRjqFocDrEi to attach a boy to a series of rails around the house. So he could travel from the dungeon to the bathroom, but always be attached to the walls...

Well that's one of the hardest bugs I've ever tracked down. Took like six hours of tracing through this stupidly complicated memoized graph traversal transitive-closure thing to figure out that deep inside we were sharing mutable structures. https://github.com/jepsen-io/elle/commit/5cc2ecaf1a0619ea8a3d91adc4740073202c1045
