Pause in your doomscrolling for a moment to reflect that a nation has been able to emerge from a decade-plus of misrule through concerted public effort. https://apnews.com/article/hungary-president-amendment-term-sulyok-magyar-b720492c8e007468e6a97519f8809394

Feel like it's time again to pull out this essay I wrote about (gulp) 9 years ago. Because nothing has been learned and those in the money see this as a feature. "Refuse to release software that erases less-salient portions of humanity, especially when those portions of humanity are suppressed by everyone else. Make software that doesn’t punch down." https://afeinman.medium.com/correlation-is-not-totality-ff1b8b72f851

Passkeys are "useful" because they take things from "something you know" to "something you have, but isn't really yours, knows, until it is remote-locked by the owner of its walled gardens". (I hate passwords. Passkeys aren't the right solution for individuals, though they rock for corporations building lock-in.)

I'm beginning to think that "ideas aren't the hard part" is something clung to by people who don't have good ideas that often. Like, don't get me wrong, an idea is just a spark, and needs tinder and kindling and fuel to become a fire. But tinder doesn't burst into flames on its own.

What would it take to pass a law in your state that made it illegal to store a user's age? We already have laws around, for example, asking for and storing SSNs. Can we move age to that category? (I am seeking a legislative solution to a legislative problem. Technological solutions and workarounds are outmatched when the other side can arrest you.)

You're feeling a lot of pressure to adopt AI because it's a trillion dollar scheme to disenfranchise programming as skilled labor. A healthy middle class exerts strong pressure against facist takeover, and is therefore under assault. Has been my entire (not short) life.

I need to stop saying incorrect things like "translation is a solved problem." It's frustrating because the propaganda is so hot and heavy but I just asked two translate apps for a simple two-character translation and got two different and wrong answers, and of course neither one included any connotation or usage context. (The dictionary app I have did both, along with sample sentences making it clear how wrong-footed the auto translation was.)

We need a word for that moment when everyone's arguing with someone you blocked and reported ages ago.

It's NOT cognitive surrender. It's not a moral failure on the part of the individual. That's like calling lethal waterboarding "respiratory failure". Technically true, completely missing the point.

The local giant megaplex shopping mall has a little free library set up outside it. I am charmed. I love this state.

Having just re-listened to Hitchhikers' Guide, I am renaming my phone the Crisis Inducer. Heck, there's one on my wrist, too. Perfectly foretold.
