  Happy Juneteenth! It's an good time to raise awareness of the racist origins of tipping in the US. I didn't know about this until a few years ago. Following the emancipation of enslaved Blacks, there were many newly-freed people needing to earn a living. Restaurants hired Blacks but refused to pay them, or paid them little, forcing them into a subservient role of asking patrons for tips.   Camas (Camassia quamash), native to western North America, at the small and understated Camassia Nature Preserve in West Linn, Oregon. Just beautiful. If you go, be aware that poison oak is everywhere in the preserve, right up to the trail.

  Mastodon safety: do NOT answer personal questions in post replies -- where you live, who you live with, what you do, where you go, etc. -- it might be the beginning of a scam. I've seen several of these in the past weeks. Replies that seem out of place, inordinately familiar or friendly, use of alluring profile photos, questions not really related or relevant to the posting. Be on guard for red flags like these. Report, mute, and block suspected scam attempts.

  What the actual fuck? ICE has been holding three members of the Oglala Sioux tribe in detention since Friday. Tribal members are US citizens by statute. Homeland Security is refusing to release any information on these tribal members, other than first names, until the tribe enters into an "immigration agreement" with ICE.   I found out why my vet's office is so backed up lately. The woman who ran the front desk, and hence made the clinic run, got sick and tired of being profiled and pulled over by federal agents on her work commute. She's a white citizen, married to someone with a Latinx last name. So it seems that ICE/CBP are using automatic license plate readers to identify cars with owners with foreign sounding names, and stopping them over and over. It's a "query string" on the end of the URL like this: ...?si=[tracker_ID_here] This ID allows YouTube (and their owner, Google, and *their* owner, Alphabet, and ALL of their associates) to track the people who click on the link, and the apps they used, back to you, building a network of none-of-their-business. Good news: DELETE the "?si=..." part & the link works just...
