Happy Juneteenth! It's an good time to raise awareness of the racist origins of tipping in the US. I didn't know about this until a few years ago. Following the emancipation of enslaved Blacks, there were many newly-freed people needing to earn a living. Restaurants hired Blacks but refused to pay them, or paid them little, forcing them into a subservient role of asking patrons for tips. Black Pullman porters spread the tipping practice across the US. 1/ https://www.npr.org/2021/03/22/980047710/the-land-of-the-fee
