Good Morning #Canada Why should you visit Fort St James, a town of 73,000 only incorporated in 1952? It is the oldest continually inhabited town in Canada west of the Rockies and served as an economic hub in B.C. for 100 years before the railway arrived. The outpost's log buildings have been preserved and you can get a real sense of how the fur trade built Canada. #CanadaIsAwesome #History #TravelCanada The Last Fur Trade Post: Preserving History at Fort St James https://terraencounter...

Good Morning #Canada Over the past week financial reports have pointed out that oil companies are recording record profits, some with a 40% increase year over year, due to the Orange Idiot starting a war in the middle east. Weird that they don't share the risk with consumers. Seems appropriate to point out that the evil #OilIndustry started in a small town in Ontario. We're sorry... #CanadaIsAwesome #History #Greed Ontario Village Where World's Oil Industry Began https://youtu.be...

Good Morning #Canada If you're looking for a unique #TravelCanada destination then Flin Flon has to be on your list. You may wonder why I'd recommend a mining town with a funny name. Flin Flon was named after a character in a 1905 #SyFy novel and is one of two towns in Canada that is separated by a provincial border. The town lies in a band of volcanic rock giving it a unique landscape in Manitoba. #CanadaIsAwesome #History Flin Flon https://thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/fli...

Good Morning #Canada One of Canada’s unique parks is one you may not have heard about. Kejimkujik National Park covers 404 km2 in southwest Nova Scotia. A large inland portion makes up the National Historic Site, and the Kejimkujik National Park Seaside is on the province's Atlantic coast. It is also designated a National Dark Sky Preserve. Rest up for your visit - Kejimkujik means "tired muscles" in the Mi'kmaq language. ##CanadaIsAwesome #TravelCanada #NationalParks https:/...

Good Morning #Canada #Manitoba is on an upward trajectory in the past year, except for very recent heat waves and wildfires. The province may be returning to a similar positive period in early 1900 when Winnipeg was booming and 1 of the most beautiful legislature buildings in Canada was built. It's story has many twists and turns, and overcame #WWI, the end of Winnipeg's boom, general strikes, and corruption. #CanadaIsAwesome #History #Architecture https://youtu.be/XZQGQwll7mw

Good Morning #Canada Every morning I post some Canadian history, interesting geography, weird factoid, strange cultural topic or moronic humor. I've learned a lot about our country but apparently there are still large gaps in my knowledge. Today I learned that the Northwest Territories and Nunavut are governed without political parties. How awesome is that. No political organizations chasing power for the sake of power. #CanadaIsAwesome #CanPoli https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consensus_g...

Good Morning #Canada In 2013 a silly little survey with zero statistical evidence nominated our nation's capital as the most #Boring city in Canada. It somehow got picked up by major news organizations - must have been a boring news week - and Ottawa has been trying to erase that reputation for 13 years. Good Morning #Canada I have some local #History for you today. OTD in 1861, the Emily May steamship was launched from the shipyard at #BelleEwart. She was a side-wheeler, measuring 47m ) in length by 7.3 in width, capable of sustained speeds of 35 km/h. The Emily May steamed around Lake Simcoe for two decades, connecting the railway station at Belle Ewart to towns around the lake. Sadly in 1882 she caught fire while anchored in Belle Ewart. #CanadaIsAwesome https://www.orilliamatters.com/lo...

Good Morning #Canada OTD in 1944, Tommy Douglas becomes the Premier of Saskatchewan. In just a few short years he would implement #UniversalHealthcare in the province and spark similar movement across Canada, ultimately resulting in a national program. His 4-6 month recovery and physical therapy has impacted my golf season so he'll have to make that up to me. Good Morning #Canada On this day in 1700, the 1st mastectomy is performed in North America at Hôtel-Dieu de Québec by royal doctor Michel Sarrazin. His patient, nun Sister Marie Barbier de l’Assomption, had been diagnosed with breast cancer but because of the successful surgery died 40 years later at the age of 77. Sarrazin was a pioneer in surgery and a scientist who developed medicine from native plants. Here's his story. #CanadaIsAwesome #CanadianHeroes https://thecanadianencycl...
