  Been a weird week in the garden, where I've gotten a lot done but also feel like I haven't gotten anything done. Today's main goals: * thin some beets, kohlrabi, other items * t-posts up for trellising on a few beds * add a run to the peas trellis so they can grow higher (hoping they produce before it gets even hotter than it already is!) * possibly get one bed of winter squash in * as always, some more bed forming (the end is in sight!) and weeding The good news is...

  We've been watching veggie prices at farmer's markets so that we have a sense of what folks are charging as we start selling our own stuff in the next week or two. (So we don't unintentionally undersell others or ourselves, or charge way too much.) But one vendor that was selling some backyard kale and radishes alongside their main business was selling their kale per leaf. PER LEAF! Never seen that before. 25 cents each! Was cracking me up.

  Finally getting some rain today. We are in this weird pocket that can sometimes get zero rain even when folks around us are getting heavy storms. (Uneducated guess is that it has something to do with our nearby lake.) Hoping for more rather than less today, even though it will throw off some of my outside work. We could really use it.

  Was filling the chickens food when the rain came. I ducked into the coop for cover. The rain is still passing. I am still in the coop.

  We got at least 3 maybe 4 inches of rain yesterday. Garden survived most of it, although I left some trays of starts out to harden off and the rain was so hard it just clobbered them. So may have lost most of a tray of basil and some cabbages and greens. Smaller injuries: pest cover on the eggplant got pulled up. Plants were OK, but I bet the flea beetles were happy. 😒 Some spots where compost mulch ran off the beds into the paths. And a wheelbarrow of compost got knocked over. But honest...

  Stopped off in a parking lot to eat a quick snack, and it is apparently the pickup site for a mobile food pantry, and wow! Talk about organized chaos! There are cars going every which way, but a volunteer/staff member directing traffic clearly has an order to everything. Also, kind of surprised at how many people are here to pickup. I know there are a lot of people in need in our area, but the visual is something else.

  Yesterday, my wife and I spent about 12 hours in the car to pick up something, because we realized shipping would take much longer than desired. We crossed three state lines -- Illinois to Indiana, Indiana to Kentucky -- and back again. In a 30 year old pickup truck with no radio and temperamental AC. Some things I learned along the way:

  Some new sprouts poking up this morning: Thai basil Genovese basil And three tomatoes: coustralee, Isis, and San marzano. As well as additional sprouts for everything started yesterday. Either today or tomorrow, we'll start a few more flats, mostly of new items who are now OK to start, calendar-wise. Didn't get the lettuces going last week, so that's also high on the list. #Gardening #Garden #SeedStarting

  Think I'm going to take a stab at a tomato bread today... One where the dough itself is flavored with tomato. No real starting recipe, will use some posts from The Fresh Loaf for inspiration on the tomato piece, and a recipe from Hamelman or Berenbaum as a base. (Maybe H's Rustic Bread?) Most of what I am seeing uses a tomato paste or puree in the mix, along with herbs. We picked up some sundried tomatoes, so I think I will fold some of those in during shaping, too. #Baking #B...

  Who else is doing some seed starting this fine Saturday morning? We just finished rehydrating some seed starting mix. Letting it dry just a bit, then we'll be getting about 100 plugs going. Mostly edibles but some flowers, which I don't have a lot of experience with yet. Thinking about just devoting a whole tray to the flowers! #Gardening #Garden
