From Strong Towns, a brief comment on a graphic going around social media showing the different priorities of Europe vs America when it comes to land use and transportation. Europe, which focuses on mass transit, has a dense, vibrant, and varied skyline, whereas the American equivalent is a couple of tall buildings being the only useful and productive spot, surrounded by a lot of wasted space in the form of parking lots. Wasted space. I said it. #Urbanism #Transportation

"To become genuinely empowered, people can work in community to meet their essential needs — food, housing, healthcare, education, energy, technology and economic stability. This is not theory. It’s already happening. Across the globe, people are building systems from the ground up that meet human needs while resisting corporate and state overreach." Link: https://www.resilience.org/stories/2026-07-14/why-building-inspiring-alternatives-is-necessary-to-counter-authoritarianism-2/ #C...

Humanity is committing suicide, tech bros aren't going to survive in their bunkers (b/c starving people will dig them out), but far, far in the future, aliens might find this planet. Or cockroaches will evolve intelligence. One of those. But if humans survive, the archive will be destroyed by some future inquisition, since it obviously was built by the devil and contains "witchcraft." Link: https://www.cnn.com/2026/07/09/climate/earths-black-box-humanity-apocalypse-tasmania #...

"Evolution’s great lesson is not “survival of the fittest,” but “survival of the most cooperative.” For 500 years, we have been led to believe that capitalism is the only kind of economy that works. But it is not working. Its leaders are destroying nature, causing climate chaos...all in the name of selfish capital gain. If that is “working”, we need something better." Link: https://www.resilience.org/stories/2026-07-07/economics-of-kindness-capitalism-tells-us-we-are-selfish-evolut...

The real purpose of a system is what it does. And our system is not providing homes, food, medical care, or accurate education to people. It is doing something else. There's no end in sight to the Hormuz standoff, and damage has already been done to spring planting & other industries. We must prepare for a serious economic crisis this fall, if not sooner. The time to begin is now. There are things that can be done personally, and at the local, regional & state levels. But the political will is not there...and won't be until it's too late. Link: https://thehonestsorcerer.substack.com/p/the-persian-polycrisis #P...

This paragraph really jumped out at me, because it tells, in a nutshell, so much about what's wrong with american towns and suburbs - and the attitudes of the people brought up in this environment. They think there's nothing wrong with this barren wasteland of forced automobile use - and yet they absolutely love going to Europe and the rest of the world to places that are *the exact opposite* of this. As I have said often, cities, counties, and states need to start billing businesses who offload their labor costs onto taxpayers, as well as revoking the licenses to operate of businesses that cost the taxpayers money, engage in criminal activity (polluting, civil rights), and also revoke building occupancy permits as necessary. Municipalities have ceded their power to corporations and it's time to stop that, dead. Link: https://www.resilience.org/stories/2026-04-22/corporations-have...

"...the panel’s audience was almost entirely geriatric white men who will not live to see the effects of climate change the way that my generation will. The message that we wanted to bring was that climate change denial is not just a matter of a difference of opinions,” said the organizer... These people think that they are untouchable & that they can spread this kind of misinformation...unchecked? No.” Link: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/apr/14/dc-conference-climat...

We can't rely on the police to protect us from maga, qanon, white nationalist, christo-fascists, techbros, predatory capitalists, or any other fascist ideology. More often than not, the cops are *part* of those parties & working *against* the rights of other people, either overtly or covertly. Expecting your enemies to protect you is not a smart plan. Communities must stand together. Link: https://www.mockingbirdpaper.com/content/my-guns-saved-my-life-when-state-and-liberals...

Wars to '"get more" are a knee-jerk, wrong, response to resource depletion. Trying to steal more from other nations won't change the fact that there just isn't, or soon isn't going to be, enough to go around. Maintaining military control over vast swaths of foreign territory is not economically sustainable. (Ask the Romans) The real solution is to pivot to more sustainable, non-military solutions. What the tech bros and wall street want you to think is important...isn't. And never will be. What do you really want? How can you preserve that for the future? "if we wrongly imagine all collapse as a sudden event, it is not only intensifying our attention — it can make some of us postpone action, if we imagine it as a spectre occurring at some point in the future." Link: https://www.resilience.org/stories/2026-04-09/what-do-we-value-most-rethinking-resilience-i...

"The pattern has become predictable: wide streets & frequent cul-de-sacs. These choices feel normal because they’ve been standard practice for decades... When streets take up large amounts of space, blocks stretch longer than necessary, and connections between streets are limited, a substantial share of developable land ends up dedicated to asphalt rather than homes, open space, or other productive uses." Link: https://www.strongtowns.org/journal/what-street-design-has...

"Capitalism...is the economic manifestation of the Windigo mentality. Like a malignant process...it must keep expanding or collapse. It cannot recognize enough. Every gain becomes a platform for further gain...Every frontier, whether a rainforest, a public institution, or even the human nervous system, becomes a new zone for enclosure & monetization." Link: https://www.resilience.org/stories/2026-03-26/our-civilizations-disease-has-a-name-windigo/ #Capitalism #Econom...

"We do need some renewables. But the ‘transition’ must be radically reframed. We must not start by asking “how do we transition the current global economy to renewable energy” – that proposition is a death sentence. We must start by asking “what are our real human energy needs, and how do we meet them in the wisest way possible?” In other words, what are the needs of thriving local economies." Link: https://www.resilience.org/stories/2026-02-13/humanity-is-not-the-problem/ #L...
