There is something to be said about conditioning and data liberation wrt/ this exchange. Platforms conditioned people to think that the companies own the data and that there is nothing a person can be done about it. Maybe solvable by paying some data-ransom. It can be either by design [plug any big-enough corp here] or by crappy #UX like in the case of #Strava here.

Conference website: Here is an invite to a tech conference 🎊 Me: Oh cool, nerdy stuff, so I can just import the whole schedule into my electronic calendar, right? Conference website: [stares blankly] Me slowly turning into Padme: ... right ... ?

If you've been wanting to move your activity history from Strava to FitPub but dreaded dealing with the export files, I made a small browser tool that does the heavy lifting. Drop in your Strava export files, it decompresses the .fit.gz files, splits everything into correctly-sized ZIP batches, and hands them back for upload. No install, no server, runs entirely in your browser. 👉 🏃🏻‍♀️ https://vast-ch.github.io/strava-archive-to-fitpub-batch-import/ #FitPub #Strava #ActivityPub #Fediverse #O...

In case you were not aware: Sharing routes from #strava with non strava users is not possible. They will not let you view the route, download #GPX, edit (a copy), nothing. The only flow allowed is to register to do even the most basic things. So please before sharing, make sure that the other person actually has strava account. Or use any other service that does not put basic things behind login. #Locus #LocusMap

There is this funny “language blindness” happening in my head: Since I’ve been using English more than my mother tongue (#Czech) for years now, I can’t tell which language I’ve used in conversations with fluently #English speaking people from my country. It just doesn’t register - language used is not part of a memory. Just that the information was passed over. Anyone else having this?

One of my explanations for confused out-of-principle #AI haters from #IT on why are those technologies so popular is: For decades elitistic IT offered half baked solutions and heaps of tools piling over each other. Nobody* wants tools. People want to solve their problems. Does Excel solve your problem with taxes? With that fancy template? Not even an inch, it’s just a tool. A tool user needs to learn, understand and use well. LLMs can give you good-enough solution. And it mostly fits.

I wonder if there is an image format useable for "streaming progressive enhancement": - Image file can be cropped at any point from beginning to Nth byte and the image could be displayed with _some_ level of representation of the _entire_ image - The more of image data is preserved, the more sharp/detailed/precise the image can be rendered This could have an amazing application as images for websites would not have to be downscaled and cached. Clients would just load &quo...

The bar for technology nowadays is to "not piss me off". It's a bit shocking how hard is it for technology to meet that bar :nkoFacepalm: #iCanBreakItForYou #MacOS #Search

Míša’s longest, uninterrupted bike ride happened when: 1) He decided to move from Northern Ireland to Scotland using only bike(s) 2) He found out that it is completely legal to bike on a Motorway in Cuba 3) He decided to hunt multi-Geocache spanning from borders of Czech Republic to the North Sea #poll #getToKnowMe #bikes

Acro Adventure Week – Niouc 16–19 June 2026 I have a ticket for sale (discounted). I went last year and it was really good – small community vibe, lots of acro, handstands, slackline/highline, yoga, Thai massage, and camping by the Niouc bridge. Unfortunately I can’t make it this year, so I’d rather someone else use it. Details: https://slacktivity.ch/shop/acro-adventure-week/ DM me if interested. #AcroAdventureWeek #Niouc #Slackline #Highline #AcroYoga #Handstands #Valais #Switzerland #Ou...

I can’t be the only one to wonder: The fact that #instagram posts and #YouTube videos play on a loop can’t be for anything else than making the number of views go up. Right? Please tell me not.

I love having *every* contact in my address book. So that I can see avatar whenever I get an email. It is IMO only logical to have support for wildcards in email/phone contact matching. Sadly, likely because nobody cares and nobody can imagine better ways, this is not possible. But that does not mean people don't want it. https://www.reddit.com/r/iphone/comments/10ry7dk/partial_or_wildcard_contacts/

I shiver every time the (typically) US media stress that [a bad thing] was done to US citizen/veteran/single mum of three/celebrity/… Not because of the heinous act that was done to the person. But because somehow it’s worse when a bad thing happens to “lovable” person. No it’s effing not. I don’t care if it’s a drug addict, homeless person or convicted felon (just stereotypical examples). Horrible things should not be done to them either. Period.

Big corp doesn't want you to know this, but: Having a Dockerfile says nothing about reproducibility of your builds. It's better than nothing, but imagine you have to bet your left pinky of your kid on whether rebuild produces the same image. You would (should!) have a pause and say "prooooobably not".
