  Spicebush swallowtails feeding on the flower buffet at #Area51. Edit: they are Black Swallowtails! Looking more closely, far more yellow spots in wing edge and they were acting very suspicious on the dill, a host plant for the caterpillars.

  Had not appreciated how much I love following people who do things and go places and above all, notice and share the world around them. I love reading about the odd little Macedonian museum you found, or the baby porcupine with its mom in your backyard or seeing the view from the top of a Welsh hill, the whimsical weirdness at EMFcamp, what’s blooming in your garden or being build in your workshop. I love that we are invited to tag along, virtual participants. Thanks.

  I want to share something that happened this week at camp. We have a mixed gender scout troop (basically, if you have (or don’t) a gender, you are welcome). Five of my scouts went on a whitewater rafting trip, a 2 hour bus ride away. On the way up, a young scout with some impulse control issues from another troop was misbehaving. My scouts tried to stop him and alert adults who eventually separated him, and gave him more supervision. 1/4

  Fixed the hose that was soaking the people as much as the plants. Finally cut out the bittersweet choking a rhododendron. After looking hard, found one solitary peach the squirrels overlooked. #3GoodThings #ThreeGoodThings

  One of my favorite times at #Area51 is when the swallows show up. Usually at dusk, but apparently midday too. In the video you can hear car noise on the road, but barn swallows, grey cat birds, a common yellow throat, song sparrow and maybe goldfinches. Really need to get a bee/wasp person out here, too and a lepidopterist.

  About to go have an educational discussion with my scouts and leaders who menstruate about how to deal with that on a camping trip, in the back county, at summer camp. The adults invited have overwhelmingly been thrilled and eager to share the lore, grateful we are doing this. The scouts, well, mostly middle school age where the entire world is hugely embarrassing. Let’s see if we can make it less so.

  Protest frog at the waterworks. One of the nearby universities wants to build a golf training facility on a rural road that has a historic conifer research area. Our town has no golf courses. I can only think of two in the surrounding six towns.

  For gardeners: tell me it’s ok to compost my old seeds. I know there’s a chance some may still be viable, but if it’s not from something I have no where else, chuck them. Right? And what’s the oldest seeds you’d still keep? 2-3 years? Depends more on what they are? How stored? It’s a bit out of hand here… #gardening

  Busy day with lots of parts. Just returned from helping at an Eagle Scout project to update and digitize maps of veterans at the big cemetery in town. The data entry part takes a few minutes per grave allowing for contemplation. Thinking about all those who serve in wars, wondering how it marked them, who they were. Came across a marker for two WWI nurses, sharing a headstone. Were they sisters? Friends? Lovers? Born and died a year apart, lived into their 90’s. What changes they must have seen.

  Exposing my deep ignorance of Wales, the country, I did not reckon with the number of castles, Roman forts, standing stones, birds, burial tombs, coastal paths, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, lambs, mossy craggy rocks, sea cliffs, beaches, beaches next to craggy sea cliffs connected by coastal paths, in AONB. How do you get any boring work done when you live there?? Aren’t you just outside inhaling all this all the time??

  My spouse, who teaches animal behavior, is unhappy with Mouse, the cat he has inadvertently trained to jump on the end table near him whenever he accidentally jiggles the box he put the laser pointer in.
