I remember reading Peter Mason's Cauchu, the weeping wood: a history of rubber, years ago. Belgium, slavery, environmental destruction. Then there's my drug, coffee - Indonesian and Vietnamese invasion, slavery and ecocide. It is chocolate today: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-08-03/chocolate-industry-child-labour-in-ghana-despite-promises/106970782 Everything we do, everything we don't do, affects others. Your freedom, your comfort? You get it by harming others.

Tired of the LLMs. I want to go back to the days when I was tired of blockchain, or even further back when I was tired of 5GLs. Those were the days. (slightly teared-up now, TBH)

Proselytizing for the #Greens I met a man who believes that many people are on the dole and are happy. "They get 6,7 or more family members on it, all share a house and live well doing nothing." I asked where he had seen this, and he said he had worked for a job seeker provider, and it was "common". I said I had never met anyone happy to be living on the dole. He said "you need to get out more" Have you ever met someone

In Our Time on Archaea. Did you know that #statins, (thanks yes, I'll have mine now) kill #methanogenic #archaea in your gut? Who knew: That there are methanogenic archaea? That archaea live in you as well as on mid ocean vents and in madsalty Lake Eyre? That statins kill them while leaving eukaryotic beasties unharmed? I am amazed. And, does anyone know what my gut will do now without its farty archaea? Do I need them? Are they helpers, freeloaders or baddies?

"I am pleased to hear the president and the first lady, along with all attendees at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, are safe," Albanese said in a statement. To misquote a far far better Labor PM: #Australia; just shoelaces dangling out America's arsehole. #Albo, you dummy, 85% of Australians hate #trump. Of those, few care how he leaves office. In a box? Yeah whatevs. Stick to your "not going to give a running commentary of the president&...

Prof Sam Lawler pointed me to this. @pluralistic “AI is the asbestos we are shoveling into the walls of our society and our descendants will be digging it out for generations” I'd liken it to tetra-ethyl lead, (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetraethyllead) it is doing harm the moment it starts, making everyone who breathes stupider. At least with asbestos, you can leave it alone and it stays put. LLMs seem far more self-exciting self-combusting. Pluralistic gave us "ensh...

#Trump versus the #Pope. A compulsive liar vs a delusionist. One believing in a god, the other believing he is god. What a world. But, the plot of this reality is a bit threadbare. Please can someone send me streaming deets for #Godzilla vs #Kong? If I am going to indulge in fictional battles, then I deserve good animation. Oooh, good point, there's #Alien vs #Predator too. That's a valid candidate.

I restarted #foomuuri, it kept logging that it was banning addresses - on and on and on, one or two per second. All of them in the ssh jail. I've not really set it up well, just out-of-the box settings. I don't run a homneypot, nor a bank. It's just me, some photos and the bullshit I do for work. I wonder how many devices are out there trying standard passwords all day, every day? People; get a hobby, go outside. Anything that is as neutrally harmless as you can manage....

I have personal experience with a compulsive liar, #fantasist, shyster, fabulist ... whatever term you prefer. He can tell me it is 3pm and I'll ignore it completely until I see a clock. It helps to look only, determinedly, solely at what such people DO, not at all what they SAY they're doing.. The correct reporting is: The President appeared at a press conference and said words. Not: The #President said "winkle purtle foo Iran blurk dorb Melania many people say flibb...

With so many men behaving badly, choosing a boy's name can be, well fraught, to say the least. I like these ones, but can't quite decide. Your fave?

Product designers. We live with/under capitalism. Your job is; 1. make a product or service, AND 2. get paid. There's a host of other things you might do as well, but if you don't do those two, both of them - then you are doing a hobby. I am all for hobbies. They're bloody marvellous, please keep doing those, as will I. Now. IF on the way between doing and paying, there's hobby things you want to do? Well that's irritating, maybe inconvenient, but ......

"suggested up to 50,000 solar panels may enter landfill by 2030, equating to around 1 million tonnes of waste." In an article riddled with misinformation and opinion this bit irked me hardest. Mathsing it up, that "equating to" means each panel weighs 20 tonnes. I don't know what kind of panels the ABC is buying, but they're not the kind I have. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-04-01/abc-reprints-advance-australia-anti-renewables-bullshit/106...

#AusPol With 'feta' on the block, what new name should #Australians use for a white soft sheep / goat milk cheese, stored in briney solution, that's good in a frittata and a rocket salad?
