Fanfiction, as a medium, isn't defined by the fact that it's in conversation with an extant work of fiction. All fiction is in conversation with other fiction. Fanfiction is defined by the fact that the specific extant work of fiction it is in conversation with is the entire reason for reading it. This also informs the structure of the work. In so-called "original fiction", you need to do the work of establishing the setting and characters, it needs to halfway stand on its own...

Train of thought: - Hm, how can I take my goofy "Solaris the Hedgehog" idea, where the Sonic 2006 final boss reincarnates as a mischievous hedgehog cryptid-lesbian and also a goofy dipshit, and combine it with my interest in robot-girls? - Ah, of course! She's an android created by Doctor Eggman, who wanted to channel or contain the Flames of Disaster and/or Solaris! This limits her ability to use that power, thus explaining why she doesn't have plot-breaking levels of power a...

TV series or other serial media with a title which seems to be the full name of a female protagonist. She appears in the opening credits and on posters and things, looking more and more happy. However, at the beginning of the series, there's no sign of her. Instead, the ostensible protagonist is a man with the same last name and exactly the same hair color and height, with negative fashion sense, slightly gaunt, and he's just the most completely lifeless and depressed person you've e...

Akira Toriyama, in 1988: Okay, so that's how Goku and Piccolo will defeat Raditz. Next, I need to escalate the threat for the new villains Vegeta and Nappa after that. Toriyama: Hmm ... I know! I'll make them way more powerful than Raditz! So powerful, in fact, there's no way whatsoever that the heroes can defeat them, short of becoming stronger! (Weird Route jingle plays)

Oh, I would've bet money that FF7R3 was going to be called "Final Fantasy VII Reunion." Guess I lost that bet. I suppose "Reunion" would've been Extremely Generic for a FF7 game. ... And instead, they went with something Extremely Generic in general.

What does Shadow the Hedgehog even do in his downtime? We basically only ever see him in the middle of excitement, or like brooding over his victory or failure immediately afterwards. Is it just, like, all brooding all the time?

Metal Overlord is great because the situation is that we're talking about an evil robotic Sonic the Hedgehog-copy, who transformed into a larger and spikier evil robotic Sonic the hedgehog-copy, who then transformed into a giant robot-dragon-monster, who finally transformed into a larger and spikier robot-dragon-monster. Also the first robot-dragon-monster is basically named after the last level in the game where the evil robotic Sonic the Hedgehog-copy was introduced.

The latest chapter of the maids-in-frumpy-uniforms-doing-skateboard-tricks manga is a swimsuit episode. I don't know what gets me more: 1. the fact that they did it at all, 2. the fact that they did it even though the characters are already wearing maid uniforms, which is its own kind of fanservice, or 3. the fact that, in contrast to the fact the entire main cast wears identical maid uniforms, they all have different swimsuits. Like I have no idea why this is all so hilarious to me when I...

Last night while I was waking up, I dozed off again and had a dream which involved writing a smutty story which then basically smash cut to me writing some sort of editorial article or polemic blog post in which I claimed that everyone could be divided into the two categories of "Below" and "My Ex". This is exactly how much detail the dream went into. My subconscious will apparently not be taking any questions at this time.

Personal Color's Touhou doujins tend to be full of stunning visuals, fascinating worldbuilding, and intriguing plots which only slightly resemble the source material. It's kind of charming in its own way, really. Definitely stuck in the EoSD black hole though.

Concept: a Star Trek Lower Decks-style sitcom set on a Borg Cube, with varyingly-silly depictions of Borg doing Borg thigs. One of the recurring characters is a human named Gary, who just sort of hangs around the Borg Cube being snarky; the reason he's never assimilated is because 1. he's not making himself a threat (an actual plot point in the shows), and 2. he has no useful skills or knowledge they'd want to assimilate. (It's implied that it's also because he's annoying...

Sometimes I kind of wonder if, like, such-and-such musicians who did stuff for movies and whatnot have done any interviews about it. Like, how did Arianne like working with Gainax, how did she feel about writing a cheerful-sounding song with the lyrics "It all returns to nothing / it all comes tumbling down, tumbling down, tumbling dowwwwwn" set to a scene where everyone in the world gets hugged and turned into Tang? How did members of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra feel about perfo...

I want Professor Tori/Victoria to turn out to be Maria Robotnik's as-yet-unnamed sister, but only after we've had enough time for her to show up in some official side-story written by someone who didn't get the memo, so it depicts her in a way that sorta contradicts this. Y'know, like how Murder of Sonic has Sage still with a black dress and red glitches.

Idea I got when I saw that someone had made Kris Dreemurr in Tomodachi Life: mod for TL or something like it where every so often, once you have enough citizens, your town/island/whatever periodically gets blanketed by a weird supernatural effect, let's call it a "Dark World." A subset of your citizens are subjected to these weird psychodramas based on their personalities, and they need to do JRPG stuff to make it go back to normal. The first time it happens, it unlocks a menu for...

Skipmore's new game Post Apocalypse Microbe Lab takes place in the same universe as Transiruby, judging by the Dimension Fall in PAML's opening credits, and it introduces my favorite new worldbuilding detail: - "Cyborgs" in this setting have visible obvious metal bits sticking out as well as fuckoff huge tubes sticking out of their backs, they can turn into motorcycles and so on, two out of the three cyborgs we see have clearly-artificial paper-white skin - "Androids&quot...

If there's an advantage the VOD version of HL2VRAI has over the edited version, it's the absolute comedic timing of the loading screens. Like I completely understand why they were fully edited out, and it is annoying to have to skip ten minutes of video and struggle to find where it ends, but it's still great.

I had to get seven new bookshelves installed to hold 2000 new books. Maybe you've seen my TEDx talk where I talk about reading a book a day. 2000 divided by 365 days equals about five and a quarter years. I'm apparently expressing the view that books are interchangeable, can always be read and understood in one (1) day, and inc...

Valve should make "Half-Life Azian" where you play as Alyx's mom in Black Mesa during Half-Life 1, ending with her doing some sort of heroic self-sacrifice to give Eli time to escape with Alyx or something. And they should make it in the Half-Life 1 engine.
