@crispius@mstdn.fname.ca @anderspuck@mastodon.social @chris@mstdn.chrisalemany.ca The logic is *supposed* to be that your stockpile is there to be a deterrent, *and* to provide you with time to ramp up domestic production to the scale so that you will be able to continue the fight unimpeded as a war continues. It seems like today’s ‘generals’ are so enamoured of the idea that they can shock and awe any enemy into submission in weeks or months that they have forgotten to do the second part?

So, I’ve never been one to pay much attention to influencers, because as far as I can tell they’re just propagandists - maybe sincere, more likely for hire. Whether old school like Oprah or new school on line, it seems people have been handing their brains over to propagandists for a while now, in accelerating volume… … which kind of explains the pickle we’re in now doesn’t it?

The SAVE act (and the Alberta counterpart that the UCP seem to be preparing for) involves a bait and switch that most people don’t seem to recognize. They take an inherent right that you are entitled to based on who you are - I am entitled to vote because I am a citizen - and trade it for a credential that can be taken away - I can only vote if I can produce document X. This puts all the power into the hands of the government… which seems a bad deal to me.

Wild storm in #yeg tonight. Out driving to pick up one of my kids and passed K-Days emptying out of all its people. Wind, rain, hail, thick enough to make driving even slowly nearly impossible. 😬 Stay in and stay safe Edmonton! #yegwx #storm #AB

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org A Canadian treasure. I think it’s pretty funny when people want to sing Halleluia at church, or weddings. A couple weeks ago I heard a Spanish youth choir sing it with thick accents even though the Italian cathedral hosting the concert insisted on ‘appropriate’ music and dress 🤣 (read the words if you haven’t yet… moderately sacrilegious text by a mostly secular Canadian jew)

I’ve often heard the (maybe not accurate) wondering of “What was that Easter Islander thinking when they cut down the last tree?” but I don’t need to wonder what the rest of the people of Easter Island thought as the last trees went down… It’s exactly what I’m feeling as big energy and big tech collaborate in the data centre explosion: massively increasing resource use in water and pollution just as we are at a pinch or tipping point.

I keep seeing comments about how we are at a tipping point only barely (or not quite) containing fascists in countries around the world. It is right to be concerned, but this framing contains an important implied falsehood: that fascists will soon out number us. So this is my reminder that even in times of peril like today: fascists are *always* a minority. They only win when we - the majority - cannot or will not stand in solidarity against them. #fascism #politics

Heard pundits today talking about the proposed pipeline as ‘ensuring energy independence’ … BULLSHIT All a pipeline does is make exports easier, more profit for oil&gas… it doesn’t help Canadians dealing with energy insecurity. #CdnPoli

I’m not sure it was ever true, and it should have been clear at least a year ago, but *now* surely it must be glaringly obvious now to anyone that the USA is no longer a “safe third country” and Canada has an *obligation* to adjust our various laws, policies and agreements to account for this reality. #CdnPoli #USPol https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada–United_States_Safe_Third_Country_Agreement

@randahl@mastodon.social When you show it like that, it sure looks hopeless, but the real situation is that there are always more anti-fascists than fascists… make common cause and don’t let the systems defeats you.

Rumours that the UCP will invoke the notwithstanding clause … over bike lanes. I hope it’s clear now to everyone that to the UCP the notwithstanding clause is their “I get what I want anyway” magic wand and that this means we no longer live in a functioning constitutional democracy. #ABPoli #ABLeg

Once again for the back of the room: blocking a person does not ‘silence’ them or impede their free speech. It is a simple action of self-determination, like hanging up the phone, or getting up and moving to a different table, or telling a person they aren’t welcome in your home. The anti-blockers think you owe it to them to stay on the phone, that you can’t leave the table, or will show up at your home anyway; these are people who show themselves to be dangerous. #Fedi #Block #BlueskyNumpties

Call-in show about tipping culture on Alberta at Noon today, but no one said the obvious thing: Tipping culture (and businesses that rely on it) is inherently exploitative because it downloads the risk of the business and the transaction onto the persons with the least privilege who are least positioned to weather failure. Regardless of the many rationalizations people invent, the underlying fact is that tipping as a practice is a tool of oppression.

So let’s see if I’ve got this straight… POTUS was worried that Iran’s nuclear program was too advanced (even though he just recently blew it up, apparently) and that this was too destabilizing to the world and might lead to nuclear war. So he launched an otherwise unprovoked war … in order to prevent war, and is now saber rattling about using nukes … to prevent nuclear war? 😞 #USPol #Iran #NuclearWar

A magpie story: two years ago in June, a wind storm blew a fledgling magpie out of the nest at the top of the neighbour’s towering blue spruce. Most of its siblings were able to flutter to a new roost, but this runt was left behind in our yard with an injured leg and not yet able to fly. It was a perilous week that included hazing from unrelated adult magpies, hiding from the other neighbour’s cat, the local coyotes, and crows. 1/ #Birds #burd #Magpie #yeg

Hey Fedifolk! Anyone in my circles in Alberta have experience with Nova Renewables for solar installations? Good, Bad, Ugly? I have an excellent roof in Edmonton, they are based in Calgary, it might be early days for us, or not if the terms are right I guess. If you are in the area and have recently done solar, any tips? Surprises, things you wouldn’t have thought about, general satisfaction? #yeg #yyc #NovaRenewables #Solar #Alberta #AlbertaSolar
