So, I’ve never been one to pay much attention to influencers, because as far as I can tell they’re just propagandists - maybe sincere, more likely for hire. Whether old school like Oprah or new school on line, it seems people have been handing their brains over to propagandists for a while now, in accelerating volume… … which kind of explains the pickle we’re in now doesn’t it?

@DavidM_yeg@beige.party this is exactly what Edward Bernays figured out a century ago. He literally wrote the book on manufacturing consent - ‘Propaganda.' He was Freud's nephew and he invented the modern PR industry. There’s a great old PBS doc called 'The Century of the Self' that traces how his ideas shaped everything from consumer culture to politics. It explains why we are in exactly this pickle. https://youtu.be/DnPmg0R1M04?is=KGfKY3mAixG_qMXT

@DavidM_yeg@beige.party The whole phenomenon is so repellent. That people willingly turn their who lives and identities over to being ads, and that people believe in them and want to follow them, is surely the sickest religion ever.
